2006 Lariat Crew 5.4 A/C problems

I am in Phoenix and I am experiencing issues with my a/c… At best, from an enclosed garage, it works ok. It has to blast on hi to "somewhat" maintain the temperature. If you go out to a store or whatever and have to park in the sun, you are in for a long ride on the way home. Eventually, it does cool down... It takes about 15 minutes. I am exploring putting better window tint on to assist in the thermal absorption into the cab. It is too bad to own a truck for a few months and have it not work too well. Other than that, it is a great truck.

I have read a few things such as two cores vs. four core radiators (Desert Package) which makes sense a little... The thing that does not though is out of the garage, with an otherwise cold car, you would think the a/c would blow colder... To me with a cold car, the cooling aspect of things has less of an affect. As things heat up, it comes more into play. Just my opinion...

Other things such as a clogged orifice tube and trying exotic additives are bunk imo… I also read one post said it could be one of the two gases is low, out of balance, and might need to get it fixed… Huh? Do cars have dual gas set-ups nowadays?

Are there any other owners out there with this issue?

~DD

P.S. The thing that is frustrating, is my other car works like a champ and barely has to work on keeping the interior cool and it is a 3 year old.

It's an 06 under warranty. Just take it to a Ford dealer for service.

A LOT of reports of newer trucks leaving the factory slightly undercharged with refrigerant. Sounds like yours may be one of them.

I have the same exact problem with my 06 Lariat SCrew. I took it to Ford this morning when they opened and they claimed they are over booked and would not be able to get to it today. In another thread an I asked and some claim it can be from an overcharged a/c also. If you have an SCrew, be sure to check the back seat arm rest for moisture. I have a leak somewhere, after reading on here, I'm sure it's coming from the brake light.

Same issue 2006 King Ranch

Sometimes my AC will only blow about 60 to 65 degrees (reading from a thermometer in the vent) with it set on auto and the temp set all the way down. ( I have the automatic climate control) If I turn the AC off wait a count of three and turn it back on it will blow cold. It will go as low as 40 to 45 degrees reading from the same thermometer. It seems to "fail" and have to be "rebooted" in hot weather over 85 outside. I took it to the dealer and they said nothing was wrong...until I figured out that turning it off and back on would make it work. I have had the truck 8....EIGHT days and it has been in the service dept. 4 times. Yesterday I showed FORD what I figured out and the admit there is a problem! They said they "will get back to me with a solution" I am a FORD guy but the TITAN is looking pretty good to me now!!

I have been havign the same issue with my 2006 since I picked it up on Saturday .. after reading this .. I started turning the AC off before I turned the truck off, and te on about 45 seconds after starting the truck .. I have not had the problem since .. I am going t ohave the dealer look at it on Wednesday, since it will already be there, but at least it works short term.

Gipraw, I have more clues!! If you "drop your gove box down" (just open it and press on the right rear to get the stop to clear the frame and let it dangle down) you can see the "blend door" check that it is operating like it should. With recirc on it should be in the forward/ up position. With recirc off it should be in the down or rear position. this will make more sense when you are looking at it. Mine will be in the fresh air or recirc off position (reguardless of what my climate control says. Until I hit the recirc button off then back on then the door will be in the correct position. I told my service advisor this and he nodded his head like he knew what I was talking about and said he would order a new blend door motor. He also stated that he knew he didn't have any in stock. Which leads me to believe they are seeing a few of these.
Please let me know what happens with yours.

From: Georgia on my mind...
I've seen several '06 Mark LTs and F150s that are overcharged from the factory, as much as a pound over. Weird, several '04s and a few '05s were undercharged, now the '06s are getting overcharged. Go figure.

I will update once I talk to the dealer again.. they can't do it tomorrow, because there isn't enough time to fit it into what they already have scheduled tomorrow.

That is NOT the blend door. It is the recirculation door.

The blend door is INSIDE the HVAC plenum and is not visible through the glovebox cavity.

thanks.. so it is the recirc door that is not working correctly.

When I switch from recirc to fresh .. nothing happens now .. it seems stuck in whatever mode it is in ..

hopefully it will be an easy fix for the dealer .. I have heard good things about their service department .. I hope they are true. (Tombal Ford)

My truck is at the dealership as I type this. I hope to have it resolved by the end of the day. I'll keep you posted. My apologies for the blend /recirc door confusion. At least I was able to convey my thought so you could "diagnose" your issue.

Unhappy Arizona also

I live in the East Valley (gilbert) and have the same problem. I have 20% tint with an 8 inch eyebrow across the top of the windshield, so tint may not be a factor. I had the Code Alarm, CA-670 remote start alarm installed, but when i remote start the truck, 3-5 minutes before entering it, it is STILL blowing warm air. I get NO cooling, until I am in gear and have driven maybe a mile or so. I thought to myself, this was a waste of money. '06 A/C SUCKS

Some News

I got my truck back from the dealership yesterday. They didn't fix the problem. The service manager told me that he was on the phone with Corporate all day and the engineers recognize there is a problem. He said FORD has 120 days to resolve the issue. He said they would either issue a T.S.B. (technical service bulliten) or a national recall once they identified the problem. The bad news is I / we will have to wait for a solution. The good news is there is a work around by "cycling" the recirculation button you can get cold air.
