A/C Compressor Blues
A/C Compressor Blues
I just bought a `99 Expedition, 5.4, 4x4, 67,000 miles. I noticed on really hot days (90+) that I have to run the a/c on max. just to stay cool. Over the weekend, I noticed a squeaky grinding sound come from the a/c compressor. It is only noticeable at idle and seemingly goes away when you rev the engine. Any suggestions? Thanks!
you should always run on max cool it pulls out more humidity because it recirculates the air . a/c systems removes moisture from the air in the process. and for the noise could be the compressor clutch also look at the water pump
I am also having problems with my compressor clutch on my 97 F150. I came here hoping to find the answers you are looking for. I really don't want to take my truck in to have the whole compressor replaced if I can just change out the broken parts.
I Decided to just start taking my compressor clutch apart. Turned out to be a really easy job to replace it. The local Autozone had a kit for it that included everything. Sorry I don't have any photos to help explain but here goes: Start by removing the belt. Unplug the wire connecter to the compressor. Remove small center bolt. the front part is on a splined shaft and will slide off. Next remove snap ring off shaft infront of the bearing. Using 2 big screw drivers or similar gently pry from opposite sides to remove the pully and bearing assembly, it is one piece. Then pry the remaining back plate off. You might have to remove the fan shroud to have clearance, especially during installation of new parts. Starting with the back plate gently tap the new one back on with a large hammer going around to keep even presure. then do the same with the new pully and bearing being very careful not to damage the bearing. It was a little hard to get started straight but once on it went the rest of the way easily. Install new snap ring. Test fit new clutch plate. Use the spacers profided if needed to keep it from touching the pully surface. reinstall front bolt. reinstall belt. Reinstall wire clip to compressor. Reinstall fan shroud if removed. Total cost after tax $108.
