Heater Core - Help

Help Me

I have a 99 F 150 I purchased in Dec 04. Since the purchase I am now on my 4th heater core. I know the previous owner and there were no problems prior to this. The last core only lasted about a month. The dealership is scratching their heads and is not really able to give me an answer as to why this is happenning.

The first core went a couple weeks after I had trailer brakes installed. The garage initially told me that the brakes wouldn't have anything to do with it but they are now backpedaling and thinking it may be. The garage has since disconnected the brakes and is checking the coolant weekly to see if there is any change. If there was a poor ground, could these failures happen this quick?

A second problem that may give someone a hint as to what is wrong with this thing. Shortly after the 2nd heater core was replaced, when I was driving the large rad hose just above the rad disconnected. I assumed someone didn't secure the hose properley after working on it and it just popped off. Well, yesterday I had two problems. First, the truck A/C stopped working and shortly therafter the truck overheated while pulling the horse trailer. The trailer wasn't loaded and should not have overheated the truck. The truck cooled down and the problem went away. Last night after about 5 minutes of driving (no trailer), the same rad hose as before blew off again. Could these two (heater core failure and rad hose blowng off) be related. Could there be an increase in the pressure in the system causing both problems?

I am hoping someone may be able to shed some light on the topic because I am at the end of my rope with this truck.

Thanks

Tod

Hey Tod,

It definitely sounds like you have a blockage in your cooling system somewhere. I wish I could point you to a particular component. Unfortunately blockages aren't very common in F150s. The easiest part to check though, would be the rad. Just disconnect the upper and lower hoses, and flush water through it while watching the flow of water coming out. It should be roughly the same as the amount of water going in. Good luck
