Question.........strange A/C behavior?

A lot of you know that I recharged my system and also when I did it. It works great. But twice now, once a few days ago and again today when I was running it on MAX, it was blowing cold, and then all of a sudden it was like the A/C was off and just running on VENT. It lasted for maybe 15-20 seconds and then went back to blowing cold again. I've never had that happen with any other vehicle I have owned. They would continuously blow cold and never blow ambient air. This is strange. Am I looking for stuff and being too critical? Or maybe there might be a problem? Or maybe I shouldn't worry about it? I seem to constantly be putting my hand in front of the vent to see if it is blowing cold. Maybe I'm being too obsessive........
Anybody have any thoughts about this?

Run the EATC self test (press off and floor together, release then press auto) and see if any DTCs are stored. Without knowing how much refrigerant is in there, I'd try checking control components first.

Okay, did that. No codes. But now the outside temp is reading 115 deg when it's about 72 deg here. The last time it came back down slowly.
But, no codes.

Funny thing is, it does blow cold. And it doesn't happen all the time, mainly during the first 10 min of driving, then all is well. Most of the time it doesn't happen at all.

Now it's like every time I drive with the A/C on. As far as I'm concerned, with the EATC on MAX A/C setting, the air should blow cold constantly until the interior temperature is 60 degrees because the temp setting on MAX A/C is 60 degrees. I don't think the air should be blowing cold then warming up, then cold, then warming up........etc...etc..........No, it's not a cool 60 deg in the cab. It's pretty warm in there.
I'm about to say phuque it. I give up...............
There has to be something wrong with it.
More refrigerant maybe??????? Who knows........

Hey there Reloader,

I had the same problem with my F150 about a week ago. For a couple of weeks I had the same symptoms. Then a week ago, the compressor clutch pulley bearing pretty well shot and made a god awful noise. I changed the pulley and clutch, and haven't had any problems since. Fortunately, the field coil wasn't damaged on mine. Hope this helps some.

Yes, it helps. Just something to look forward to. Glad I have an extended warranty..........
Thanks. It's not making any noise now, just running as smooth as can be. Only 45,000 miles on it. Shouldn't it last longer than that?

Okay, here's an update.........
Ran the A/C for 15-20 min at idle sitting in my driveway yesterday.
Setting MAX A/C.
Blew ice cold air constantly. Compressor ran constantly. Water dripped from the tube under the truck.
Today.......on the way home from work.........
Ran it on MAX A/C......kept my hand on the gearshift **** to feel the air. I have a 3 mile drive home. In those 3 miles I felt the air get warmer about 4 times then back to ice cold. When it would start blowing warmer, it only would last maybe 10-15 seconds, then back to blowing ice cold. It seemed to only happen when I was moving, not at a stoplight. Shouldn't it blow cold constantly? Or does it do that so as not to have the system ice up? But it ran ice cold for 15-20 minutes in my driveway yesterday so I don't know about that.

On the highway, where did you have the fan set? Lowest speed? The system may be freezing up.

Fan was on the highest setting.
All I did was........hit the AUTO button to start the system.
Waited a bit, then hit the MAX A/C button. Didn't touch the
fan thumbwheel.

Could it possibly be nothing wrong with the A/C?, but maybe the outside vent door is not sealing properly and/or the door between the evap and heater. Is it happening with speed changes or not; not even sure if these doors are still vacumm operated or not.

It's possible I suppose. How would I check that?

The black trim piece in the center of the dash on the transmission hump, remove it, and you'll see the blend door motor. Has one white connector going to it. On the top of it (you'll have to look through the gap between the motor and the plentum case) you'll see the part where the blend door motor connects to the door. Key on, work the temperature controls from hot to cold and see if there's a split in the end of the door that attaches to the motor.

I might add that sometimes when I turn the A/C on, I hear a "THUMP" and feel it in the floorboard. That doesn't happen all the time, though. Geez, didn't the previous owner ever run the A/C????
Okay, Quintin, how do I get that piece off so I can see what is going on in there?

Should be held on by a couple pushpins on either side, just pops off.

I don't think that THUMP is a good thing.
