Question replacing A/C compressor

The front seal is bad on my A/C compressor. I picked one up from a salvage yard and I want to put it on myself.

Has anyone done this before? What is the best way to release the pressure in the system?

Thanks for any help!

Recover the refrigerant and replace the compressor.

Be SURE THE NEW COMPRESSOR HAS OIL IN IT !!!!!

You might want to replace the accumulator as well.
Check the orifice tube and pull a vacuum on it for at least 30 minutes. Recharge to spec and
CHILL !!!!!

I'm putting a new compressor in my truck...

the old compressor had a leak in the front as well...i got a new compressor but i need to add oil to it before i can put it on...

the cans of refrigerant they sell have 2 oz of oil in each can... if i use 3 cans i'll get 6 oz of oil in the system. the new compressor states it needs between 3 and 5 oz of oil. will the oil added with the freon be sufficient? or do i need to add more oil directly to the compressor?
