AC problem, please help!

When we drive along with the A/C on, the truck vibrates (a back and forth kind of hitch in the get-along). Otherwise, it goes just fine. A/C also doesn't cool as well as it should.

I thought I'd ask the esteemed members here before I go, hat in hand, to some repair shop. I have a '97 reg cab with the 4.6L V8, if this helps, and had it tuned up a year ago.

your level of freon is to low and the pressure switch is turning on and off the compressor...it's designed to turn off if the pressure drops below a certain level to keep from burning up the compressor..you have a leak and you need to determine the location..look at the condition of your condensor coils(in front of the radiator) they are prone to getting holes in them from rocks and 100 MPH locusts ..also check behind the clutch on the compressor..if there is oil dripping or staining on the bottom of the compressor around the front of the compressor then you have a leak there at the seal on the output shaft..these unfortunitly should be left to the pro's...you can save some bucks by taking it to a shop that does A/C's only..they handle enough to cut out the time BSing around trying to figure it out...good luck

Sounds like a compressor gone sour to me...
My advice to you.... Keep the AC turned OFF until you can get it looked at.. If you keep forgoing the hitch, and IF it is in fact the compressor, it is bound to seize up and then it is liable to burn the drive belt right into... Then you have to worry about NO power steering, overheating, etc..

Good Luck
