Ticking noise

My compressor is making an audible ticking noise when it idles and you have the ac or defroster on. What could be causing this? My guess is the clutch kicking on and off. What would cause it to kick on and off so fast? It ticks about as fast as a clock, one per second. Thanks guys.

Could be the cycling switch has gone bad. Mine on my 97 F-150 went bad about 2 years ago, and the A/C clutch would cycle constantly.
