Replace Cigarette Lighter with Dual USB Ports

Hi everyone,

I have a 2006 Ford F-150 King Ranch edition. After 9 years of owning this truck, I FINALLY am replacing the 6 CD changer with a new Pioneer App Radio 4! Excited!

I've got my dash apart and while waiting for a trim kit and wiring harness to come in from Amazon.com, I'm thinking of how to expose the two USB ports on the back of the radio in a way that is easy for me to plug in lightning cables.

I've looked at my dash and noticed the cigarette lighter plug just above the pop-out ashtray. This is a perfect place. Since I only use the lighter plug to charge my iPhone anyway, replacing the entire cigarette lighter plug with dual USB ports would be perfect.

Note I am talking about a total replacement/removal.

I've removed the long oval panel that has the cigarette lighter on the left and rear-parking obstruction button on the right. I've extracted the cigarette lighter from the panel and have a nice round hole.

Does anyone know of any aftermarket solution that would give me two (preferably) USB ports that would fit in this round hole where the cigarette lighter plug was? the ports need to have male USB connectors on the other end to plug into the back of the App Radio 4.

Hi Boisy - I know this is not what you asked, but I replaced the 6-CD player in MY King Ranch with a Kenwood AM/FM/CD/DVD/GPS, etc. and simply ran a USB cable from the back down to just behind the left hand kick panel on the passenger side. It's easy to pull off whenever I need to access the USB port (mostly when I update the maps). You could also run the cable into the back of the glove box if that would be more convenient for you.

Of course, if you are planning to connect something more frequently, this would not be a good solution. And, I'm not finding anything that looks like what you need. All I see are adapters that let you charge your USB device from the cigarette lighter, nothing with a cable to transmit data.

One could be made, if you can work with very fine wires, but I wouldn't want to try.

- Jack

Thanks for replying Jack. You're right... I do have options for running the cable in other places (glove box for one, middle arm rest for the other). It's just that I was hoping for a more natural location.

I could probably rig something up, but I was hoping there was something that could give me a head start. I'll wait and see if there are any other replies to this thread and see where it goes.

If you haven't found one yet.

I hope thats what you were looking for. Also MB Quart's PSAP-2 looks a little better imo if you don't mind sacrificing one of the usb's for a 3.5mm port.
