Question Swapped factory radios, now no steering wheel controls, help please

Hey everyone,

I had a CD/AM/FM radio, crapped out. Replaced it with a 6CD/MP3/FM/AM. Everything works fine except the steering wheel controls.

Original part number: 5L3T-18C869-AF
Replacement number: 8L3T-18C815-MA

Seller on fleagay says it is unlocked and should work out of the box but obviously doesnt. He claims that "The best way to find a 6 disc with the steering controls would be to contact a dealership. They would need to run your VIN# to see if it would be an option for you."

It was cheap enough thats why I didnt go aftermarket.

Any suggestions? Is this something that the stealer or someone with a pds can program?

Thanks

SWI control

Did your head unit come with the Steering Wheel Control Interface? If not you will need to purchase one. You can get them at local car audio shops, best buy, or online. They typically run about $50.

They're both factory radios (part numbers above). The wheel controls work on the original (CD) but not the "new" one (6CD/MP3). And yes they both came for SW controls

Isnt the SWI is for aftermarket units?

the radios changed in 07. your origonal was a pre unit and the new one is a post. whats happening is the newer units probably use the can bus to interface the steering wheel controls. the older ones had the wheel control wires in the main harness plug

Thanks picks, I wonder how people managed to install post 07 radios? Do they flash them before they do?

So what would be the solution to this?

So no one knows, or no one wants to share. Which one is it?
