iPad as a head unit

I want to make an iPad into a head unit. But all I have seen so far is basically an iPad used as a glorified iPod. I want to use the iPad as my head unit and be able to control my EQ and everything through it. Does anybody know how this can be achieved? I don't want any supplemental head unit for it. I want to use my iPad as a head unit.

I think you would have issues with connecting speakers to it directly, and getting it to turn on and off with the ignition

I'm currently searching for an app or something that can give me the EQ setting I find on my pioneer I have now. I have found a cable that has 2 sets of RCA on one end and an iPod/iPad/iphone connector on the other end, so I would think that I could possibly hook up to my 2 amps from there and be golden, but I'm not too positive.

I've thought about this too. The cable you talk about would work OK but you need a way to charge the ipad too. For myself I can't find ways to interface with hands free calling (bluetooth), steering wheel audio controls and sync. I have tossed around the idea of putting the factory head unit in the center console and mounting the ipad in it's place. Hope you find something.

For my dads 1950 F1 we used an amp 2 speakers and a headphone jack to RCA cable to plug in an ipod or anything else.

For the charging part, I have an ipod cable that has rca terminals and a usb that plugs into a wall jack or car lighter

Yeah. You can have them build you one or build your own. Ive decided that I think this isnt as good of an idea as I thought it would be.. It would be nice if a company made a double DIN screen that was solid glass AND 100% Retina touchscreen like the Apple products, and had all the cool stuff, but since Apple is the only company tha seems to make cool stuff, I dont think they'll be diving into the car audio world anytime soon.. What I really want is all the features an iPad has, coupled with all the features a Pioneer AVIC Z130BT has. I can dream cant I? haha.

Personally I'd think the glass face would be annoying in direct sunlight, having driven an ipad2 for a few weeks. Definitely appreciate the creativity in the vid though.

I would like the crystal clear display, clean lines, large screen, flawless touchscreen, apps, and basically everything about my iPad, on my screen in my truck.. If it had custom EQ and dedicated subwoofer controls in an app or just the iPad EQ itself, I would start hacking away at my truck tonight to get this done. I can already plug my iPad into my current Pioneer head unit, but I want that large clear glass display to be on my dash, not in my lap.

Apple actually jumped big on integrating their Ipods with car stereos, particularly with Alpine in the beginning. But the problem with Apple going with a device that is totally mobile electronics is that department has already been hit by lots of other manufacturers and having a 7" computer in the dash just doesn't seem feasible. Cell phones already do what most people would want out of a mobile computer. So the addition of an Ipad or some sort of a computer would have to be totally custom. But give it some time, Android, Windows Mobile, and Apple have great portable software and I'm more than certain you'll be finding a headunit that OS driven by one of the big portable programmers.

iPad Creation

So I know this post is a bit old but I've started a project that some of you might find interesting. I'd also be interested in any photos of installs that you have done utilizing an iPad. You can find my project at http://lindipad.blogspot.com
