new style 97 head unit question

My dad has a new body style 97 and would like to have a cd player because he only has the am/fm tape, but the problem is he wants it stock or look very similar to stock (**** like that) ive been told that there is not a plug and play cd player made for the year that is oem... what options do I have?

A little confused.... a NEW body style 97? That body style is 14 years old! The stereos from 97 to 03 will fit.

4by4 97 was a special year they made the old flat front end body style i belive it ran from 89 to 97 and they made the 1997 to 2003 body style also.... for the record i went at it on google and got my answer there is not a cd player offered for the 97 year only a cd changer... but any cd player from 98 to 03 will fit if you remove the cross bar and the plug will not be plug and play you will need to buy a harnus for a 97 and one for the 98 to 03 years splice them together and it will work after that point... thanks tho!

and it is 14 years old but only has 43,000 miles on it... garage queen lol

Thats a good find with that low mileage. My 97 Ex had the disk changer. I had Boston acoustic components in the doors and MBquarts in the rear doors. Sony sub and a rear DVD system. That was all playing through the Mach sound system that was factory in it. Why doesn't he just put in an aftermarket unit? The sound will be 100 times better. I would suggest that you change out the factory speakers. Even when new, they were marginal at best. After 14 years, I am sure they are dry rotted.

not a good find, its been his from new... he is almost 55 and doesnt ever listen to music over the number 3 bar on his stock radio lol thats why I dont even try to talk to him about new speakers and the stock speakers are in good shape sound "good enough for me" is what he just said lol the truck is imaculant inside and out.... I tryed to explain it all to him as I have the whole sound system thing going on in my 05 but he didnt wana hear it... he just wants it to look stock and play cd's thats it... says " I dont want a aftermarket radio, it looks like the truck is owned by some teeniebopper I want it to look like it came that way" JUST HOW HE IS IDK WHAT ELSE TO SAY LOL

I have a factory AM/FM casette with cd controls, and a 6 disc changer that I took out of my 2001. No harness as I left the wires in place.
If it's something you're interested in, make an offer.

Hey man thanks I won a bid on ebay ill get back with ya here in about 2 days I got the one on ebay for 50 bucks on a cd player only out of a 2003 but seems like the guy isnt going to except my payment and is just gona keep the cd player :/ hate that **** wont respond hasnt made any connection at all... so the way that looks its gona fall through so I will more than likely be in contact with you..

I have never seen this setup so help me out... it has a tape player in dash but all cd's must be put in the changer correct? then once cd is in changer you can opperate it from the dash controls... then second question is where is the changer located in the truck? and i presume i will be running wires to it?

Thanks

That's correct. AM/FM and cassette in dash. Controls for CD changer in dash. Has controls for speed adjustable volume and all that. It's a quality factory radio.
6 CD's go in the changer that is mounted behind the rear seat in my Supercrew. It could be mounted in a console, under a seat, etc..

Not sure about the wire harness to connect them together. You may only be able to do it with the factory harness. That would be the tricky part.
I wasn't even about to try to remove any of the wiring as I didn't have any reason to.

It's sitting on a shelf in my garage, not going anywhere. Take your time, and see if it's something you can use.

Any possiblity that you have a harness in place already for that option?? If you could simply plug it in, you're in like Flynn.

Here's what they are. I believe these are the exact same, but would have to go to the garage to check for sure.

Would this be the harness you would need to connect them together?? http://www.radiosandmore.com/rm/prod...asp?pn=CJA2328

shizriz thanks but I finally recived the head unit in the mail today...

only had a little bit of time to check it out bout 10 15 min so i ran out and gave it a test fit... anyone done this as of right now looks to me that there is a small gap at the top of the head unit after the plastic goes back on that will show any way of covering this up by trimming ? or is the 97 plastic bezel that goes around it diffrent than the other years maybe... maybe this could be fixed by using one of the other years? jw here it is probably not more than a 1/4 inch but he will wig over something like that...

Cool. Glad you received it. You may need to get an after market faceplate to make it a good fit. Checking with a local stereo shop so they can give it a look see, may be the best bet.
