Volume distortion/Mustang

I have posted on a few Mustang forums with no replies, so I am trying here. I recently bought a 92 5.0 and it is in incredible shape. The previous[2nd] owner put in an aftermarket CD player which is fine, but I wanted to re-install the factory unit.[came with the car] It is the am/fm cassette stacked with the factory equalizer.

I will try and describe this the best way I know how.
The volume control is such that I turn it slightly and get a large amount of static feedback while still hearing the station I am on. Example, I might have it 1/4 of the way up and its blaring. 1/2 way up and you hear it, but definitely not the normal output. I was told there is a way to fix it,whether sending it off or somehow replacing a part?? I want to keep the car pretty close to original, so any help is greatly appreciated,if you are clear as mud. Thanks

Im guessing this wasnt an issue with the aftermarket? Sounds like a defective potentiometer on the factory deck.

Maybe contact the guys at Vintageautoradio.com and see if they do repair or know someone who might service older, late model radios.

Correct, the aftermarket is/was fine. No doubt it is in the factory unit. Thank you for the info, Ill check into it
