Help me choose a Head Unit
Help me choose a Head Unit
Ok guys here is the deal I have a Kenwood Double Din DDX7017 with the 4100DVD Nav under the seat.
I love the unit but it is going on 5 years old and I was looking to upgrade
I want to stay with a DD unit and I would prefer not having to put the nav DVD in when ever I want to use it which is why I liked the 4100. I see after reading here allot that the 2 most popular brands are Pionner and Kenwood.
I want the Bluetooth and Ipod and Sirius addons which I have now so what deck would you guys recommend ?
I looked at the I looked at the Avic D3 but you cant have the Nav DVD and something else in at the same time as there is only one slot so thats out. But what other toys Urr I mean models would you buy and why ?
Thanks

I know a lot of people will find this hard to believe but I had a D3 and overall it is a decent HU but it had a few annoyances that really bothered me. If you use an iPod and select a playlist, then shut off the radio and try to go back to the previous playlist menu it takes you all the way back to the beginning instead of just letting you select a different playlist. It seems like a stupid oversight to me. Also, I have a stilleto 2 and when you use an AV input as an audio input (the only way you can use an audio input) it displays a black screen but is still backlit. I wasn't impressed with the bluetooth module either. It is very tempermental when pairing certain phones and requires you to push data to it anytime you update your contacts. The NAV is pretty good but it's biggest shortcoming is that you cant sort POIs by distance.
I replaced the D3 with a Jensen (Yes, Jensen) VM9022 and I couldn't be happier. The Jensen displays a standard screen for AV input until it detects video. The iPod menu works better and I like the spectrum analyzer. The Jensen provides separate EQs for each source, is multi-zone capable and even has an addon touchscreen option for the second zone. It fades in and out between sources and when muting and unmuting. The bluetooth works like OEM where it pulls from the phone each time it connects. The only external box is my XM tuner. There is a new version out this month called the VM9022HD and VM9022HDN. The first one adds HD radio and the second one adds HD radio an NAV. There is an add-on NAV101 that uses an SD based map database. There are just all kinds of little touches that really make using the Jensen much more enjoyable. Audiovox bought out the parent company of Jensen in 2003. Since then they have really worked to make Jensen a competitive brand. I used to laugh at the Jensen name but I'm convinced they provide the most bang for the buck. There is also a hidden menu that allows you to override the parking brake lockout.
I forgot to mention that the Jensen also includes RDS and the D3 does not.

Avic Z2... www.sonicelectronix.com has it for $1079 with free shipping, free wiring harness, free dash kit.
Z2 has a 30gb or 40gb hard drive. No navigation cd, it's stored on the unit itself. You can save songs off of the radio. You can save songs off of cds onto the unit. The navigation is one of the best if not the best. You can put in a phone number and it'll pull up the address.

Are these guys at Sonic Electronix for real ? Their low prices are a scam. If I choose the Z2 Pionneer package they want $50 bucks to ship to me in Ontario, that is the first strike then when you go to checkout you see this in the fine print

$21 buck if I use a Credit Card ? Get real ! This was going to be my first purchase from them but I can tell you they will NEVER get my business now again !

That's fine they don't need your business to stay in business. Good luck trying to find someone even close to their prices. I think that is only because you're out of the country though. I've ordered a bunch of stuff from them and never paid that fee. I also paid with a credit card.
