4.) Had dedicated pre-outs for front, rear and sub
5.) Displayed a good deal of id3 tag info on the screen rather than 8 characters or so at a time
6.) Integrated the ipod controls into the HU controls with no delay and ease of use
7.) Less than $500

Slider, this unit fills the bill on almost all those needs. It has the most info on screen at 2 full lines, high speed selection, has bass engine with crossover changes to both bass and treble, it has 2 ohm pre-outs for front and rear and separate on for bass woofer allowing you to control and change sub amp from 60, 80, 100, and 120 points. (worth noting because I laughed not long ago when someone said they wish the pre-outs were still 4ohm like their old unit.....2ohm is better!!!!!!!) There is zero delay on controls ipod to h/u and the sound is perfect. This is the first unit to include a dedicated in put just for ipod. I love this deck and I have been running Alpine h/u for 15 years.

Thanks, dude. More and more it sounds like this is a sucker I should look into at my local installer shop. Thanks again!

Red Wing Nut, thanks for the info. I figured it out last night. The HU had to be mounted as an ISO DIN instead of using the cage. The kit came with two pieces that get attached to the sides of the HU using the screws that came with the HU or the kit (I don't remember which) and then it snaps into the mount. It now sits completely flush and has the kit's finish ring on it. It looks so much better now.

I got a 9856 and im wiring the thing yup right now. I got an adapter plug and it has 2 orange wires, orange & white and orange & black, but the apline harness just has solid orange. which one on the ford harness is the dimmer wire?

[edit]
well after readin around, seems like the dim option dosent work so well so i just left the orange un plugged. I went to the website of the company that made the wiring harness ( http://scosche.com/ ) and they make a direct plug in harness(no connecting wires) so when i put in my sub, ill get that and throw it in there. ill post some pics in a day or too so ya'll can see my wonderful installation.

That's my radio!
And here's the angled picture of how flush it is. It took quite a bit of time, but I tried it 3 different ways and this is the one that came out best. I honestly don't remember exactly how I did it.

I wouldn't bother connecting either of them. I forget which wire I used, but the dimmer for the stereo is useless. When I turn the dimmer on the truck down the lights on the radio hardly dim and just pulsate when it's all the way down.

Here's a write up I did of mine if you're interested.

As you can see, i just dropped the ipod cable in my glove box. it(the ipod) didnt fit in the lil cubby hole with my skin on it, and i like the idea of it being hidden in the glove box. i also didnt like the look with the OEN alpine trim ring, so i used the one with the installation kit that i think looks alot better. now i just gotta start saving for a sub & amp!

I'm considering this H/U as well...
Crutchfield sells that ipod cable from Alpine for 30 bucks.

How long is the cable? Would it be long enough to run under the carpet and up into the armrest compartment in a 2003 bench seat?

Metallitera: did you swap out the factory speakers too? How does this stereo sound without an amp? I may not get to do everything at once either.

cable is 3 or 4 feet long....maybe 6 now that i think about it.

i still have factory speakers, the sound is alot better than factory HU but still sub par for my taste. im gonna get kappas in a cpl weeks i think. stereo sounds good without amp, just the crappy OEM speakers.
