Question about Steering Wheel Controls

I have searched this but didn't find anything. I have a 04 F150(new body) XLT. It only has cruise on the wheel. If I put a wheel from a truck with the radio controls in the wheel and a 6disc unit, are the wires already in the truck for it to work? Would it work? Sorry, I don't know squat about electronics. Thanks!!

Probably not, and it is quite extensive to add the necessary wiring. It has been done and details are posted on this forum. Is it the controls on the wheel you want or do you just want a different style steering wheel?

I am putting the OEM black leather in my truck and was also going to put a black leather wheel and airbag in it. Some of the black leather wheels have the radio control buttons already there so that's why I was wondering if the wiring was already in the truck for those buttons to work. Thank you for your reply...Mike

The easiest thing to do would be to use the buttons off your old wheel. I also installed a leather wrap wheel on my truck. I used my old cruise buttons so I would not have idle buttons on my wheel. As I mentioned earlier, the wiring for the radio controls is pretty extensive. Here is a pic of my wheel.

Thanks for the reply jmpancoast! That looks great and is exactly the look I want. Did you paint your airbag or replace with a black one? I guess I was dreaming when I thought that maybe the wiring might already be in place for the radio controls. Mike

My original wheel was black vinyl so I already had the black air bag. The airbags are fairly readily available on EBay. You could always paint yours. Then if you don't like it, spend $75 to $100 and buy the black airbag.
