Bad Disk Errors

Ok, so back in March there was a post through "Blue Oval News" that was talking about the problems with the 6-Disc In-Dash MP3 Player saying "Bad Disk" and that the dealerships had been authorized to replace the defective decks....

My question is who has had this problem, and how did the dealership handle it?

I just had mine "serviced", and they left me without a radio at all for over a week. I'm not happy with how the situation was handled, and need to know how everyone else's service went.

Thanks for helping me decide if I have a legitimate reason to complain or not.

Did they actually fix or replace yours? Did it make any difference?

Mine seemed to skip earlier, but that was summer. I thought it was because of the CD media I was using. But now it's cold outside and I don't seem to get an skipping or 'bad disk' errors. Maybe it's heat-related. I'll wait until it gets hot again and see if it reoccurs... But also note that the HU does normally run hot.

I have been having some problems with my factory 6 disk HU also. Alot of times the disk wouldnt grab, then it would get stuck and the HU would make some wierd noises. Then it would intialize the the HU for about 5 minutes, then finally it would play. Then last nite, I bought a Chris Cagle CD from Best Buy, and the damn thing started acting all crazy. Sounded like a grinding noise, and then wouldnt show that I had a cd in that slot. So I took them all out, and finally it let me remove it. I then tried the new cd again, and it said 'Bad Disk' Well, I was still in the parking lot, and took it back in and they gave me a new cd. Same frigg'n thing, 'Bad Disk' So I took it home, tried in the home stereo, and presto works like a charm. This morning just to check, I played in my office managers Scion and played like a champ. Now its sitting at the Ford dealer. The Fleet SVC Manager I use, told me that there were some problems and that no, I wouldnt loose my deck for a week, that he would just get me a new one. In the meantime, he wanted to play with my setup and asked if he could borrow it, and since he hooks me up all the time, I let him. So hopefully by the end of the day, he will have hooked me up with a new head unit, or one that will be in shortly. I'll let ya all know what happens.

No problems at all. Talking with my svc manager, he said he has replaced quite a few in the 04-05 F150's. They had mine replaced right on the spot. Took them like an hr considering they were busy and that, so I do have to say my dealer took care of me like usual! Team Ford in Humble, TX, if your around this area have always treated me great. Not the reg svc dept, but the fleet svc dept. Thats what I recommend people do, is goto the fleet svc next time. Those guys are usually the more knowledgable, and are easier to work with IMO.
The only thing that torq's me off, is my cd still wouldnt play. Still says bad disk. Guess I will try and burn it, try that, and if it doesnt work, the cd goes to my good friend cuz it works in her Scion.

Supposedly the dealers had already been authorized to REPLACE the defective decks once you bring it in......The problem is my dealer said "we don't have ANY decks we can put in, and we have to send yours to be serviced.....9 times outta 10 they send a new one back...."

So, after I complained to the service department, with no luck, I was left without a radio for a week.....just a hole in the dash. Then they called to tell me it was in, but wouldn't put it in till the next day. I told them I'll put it in myself, they said they can't do that, and I told them to box the #$%^ thing up and ship it to the other major dealership in town, 'cuse I was pissed off on how this was handled from the beginning........

Now, a week later, I haven't got my "Service Quality Call" or anything in the mail from them as far as paperwork or Service Survey. I'm curious to what extent I need to complain about this........

That is what the problem is! It won't read cd's, specifically burned cds. I wold say you STILL need a new deck.

beerman, you got ripped indeed. They should have had some in stock or at least let you keep yours till they got a new one in. That is what my svc manager told me. Again, I could not stress enough, to skip those reg svc pukes and find the Fleet Svc manager. He by far is gonna hook you up. I have always found that there is less hassle in dealing with the fleet dept.
My svc manager did agree with you, that if someone complains, they are to replace the cd player. Even the TB out says the same thing, to replace it. Something to do with a overheating problem.

I agree Opie.........

If anyone can get a copy of that TSB, I would GREATLY appreciate it! I looked when they said they were going to have to send it in, and I couldn't find it.....

QUINTIN----->HELP BUDDY!!!!!

As of now, the radio was "repaired" (or at least it is NOT new) and no problems with it yet. Last one took almost a year to the day from my purchase to bust.

Notes

TSB 05-10-19

05/30/05

INTERMITTENT CD PLAYER CONCERNS - AUDIO
UNIT PROGRAMMABLE MODULE INSTALLATION
(PMI) REQUIREMENTS

FORD:
2005 Five Hundred, Focus, Freestyle, Mustang, F-150

MERCURY:
2005 Montego

This article supersedes TSB 05-06-09 to update the service procedure.

ISSUE
Some 2005 vehicles built before 2/24/2005, and
equipped with a 6 disc CD player with MP3
capability (e.g. radio must have MP3 logo present),
may exhibit one or more of the following intermiffent
CD player concerns.

^ CD player skips repeatedly

^ Locks up when playing certain homemade CDs

^ Displays "Error" or "Bad Disc" repeatedly

^ Will not accept CDs

^ CD inoperative or inconsistent playability of some CDR media

ACTION

^ Obtain detailed description of symptoms reported by customer.

^ If issue only occurs with a specific CD, examine the CD causing the concern. Confirm that it is in good condition (e.g. CD is NOT chipped, warped, scratched, labeled, or contaminated).

^ Replace radio with latest service level through your facing audio service center.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

When replacing the audio unit (radio) on 2005 Freestyle, Five Hundred, Montego and Mustang vehicles it is necessary to perform programmable module installation (PMI) prior to removal of the old audio unit. This information must be uploaded into the new audio unit once installed. Failure to perform PMI on the new audio unit may result in inoperative backlighting and/or diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2477. It is not necessary to perform PMI on the F-150 or Focus.

If communication cannot be established with old audio unit to download this information or if old audio unit is not available, as built data will need to be entered. Use NGS+ or PDS scan tool to complete the operation or follow the procedure below using WDS:

1. With radio (ACM) DISCONNECTED, start a new WDS session (delete existing session if started).

2. After WDS identifies the vehicle, select Toolbox > Module Programming > Programmable Module Installation > ACM.

3. Follow WDS prompts, connect radio (ACM) when prompted to "install new module" hit tic mark to continue.

4. WDS will prompt for as built data. Enter as built data and finish following prompts until "module configuration successful" is displayed.

As built data can be obtained at the Professional Technician Society (PTS) website or at the Ford website. For additional information, refer Workshop Manual Section 415-01 and 418-01.

I need to get mine replaced. But the dealerships around here can't test Ford radios. they always have to send them in.

I figure I'll just buy a new HU to replace this crappy one that came from ford.

FX, Id show them this TB and make them order you a new one, then when it gets in, then have them replace it. My dealer immediatly replaced mine. Took them 2 hrs, only because 1 1/2 was spent messing around with my truck. Plus, I wasnt ready to pick it up quite yet. Seriously, I would force the issue that you bought a trk with the understanding the radio would work, and dont feel like driving a trk without a radio. Im taking mine back in tommorow on account it was replaced today, and still getting the bad disk error. Friggn cd plays in a scion, and a crummie ol stock dodge cd player.

I would be all up their backsides. But truth be told. I only listen to Cd's once in a blue moon. I've got my XM radio that basically replaced my CD collection.

But I do have that on my to do list.

Regardless of if you listen to cds often or not, that is something that you should have fixed......If not for you, then the next owner......

Thanks Opie!!! I'll use that to "light up their ashes!"

Mine will work with any cd i throw in it, but if i hit a button on it to skip ahead or back a track before it is done doing it's thing after startup, it will kick the disc everytime. I haven't had it kick one during play for a long time.

My dealer is great also, small family type place. I f I have a problem they will fit me in asap.
