radar detector

I've seen quite a few threads recently concerning speeding tickets..... why don't you guys/gals invest in a good radar detector ??? Some of these law enforcement people are hell bent on pulling over high performance vehicles...... I was pulled over several times in my vette for infractions varying from not using turn signal to change lanes, or following to close to the car in front of me....... but never for speeding. Always drove away with just a warning !!! It is well worth the investment..... just the peace of mind. I want to know when they're around.... whether or not I'm speeding !

Actually, I've always wanted one. When I go on long trips, SFO to Portland and sometimes SFO to Seattle, I borrow my brother's cheap radar detector.

Now that I have the HD, it is more likely to be spotted easily. I'll do a stealth install which is by the overhead console and hardwired.

If anyone is interested, they should do a search in the forums. We had a pretty good discusssion about this a few months back. One of our members (PhillyRube I think) is a really nice guy and a Police officer in the South East. He was giving all kinds of great information.

That was always the nice thing about owning a truck! I had a 98 Dakota R/T and let me tell you I drove that thing like a bat out of hell! The cops would never even look twice at a truck, but little did they know it had a 360 V8 in it. That was the only car I owned that I did not get picked up in, I was picked up in my Mustang GT, and my Taurus SHO, but never the truck.

Slingshot has the right idea

The Valentine 1 is a great radar detector...for a smaller and yet less expensive way you can go is the Passport 8500. It doesn't have the arrows but it's $100 cheaper and also easier to find a place to put. The Valentine is just HUGE.

Slingshot...where did you mount yours? Do you have the stealth gismo that plugs into the lighter?

There is a good article about a Laser Jammer in Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords this month. I don't remeber the brand and I didn't buy the Mag ( flippin' pages at WalMart while the wife was getting groceries). Anyway, they could not get the laser to properly ready the speed of the car the Jammer was mounted on untill long after the warning alarm sounded.

I don't think the laser detectors give enough warning for anyone to be able to react. I have a BEL radar detector but I no longer use it - seems all the police are using laser guns anymore.

I do have a CB radio and on the Interstates I feel it is the only way to go.

The discussion before talked about the Laser and Radar detectors working best when there was other cars on the road. When the cop tagged them (in front of your). . .BEEEEP you slow down. So when you pass the po-po's location you are going closer to the speed limit.

Radar and Laser "Jammers" are supposed to block the reading of speed completely. I think these are illegal in most states.

All the tests I've seen on these so called "jammers" indicate they are pretty much junk !!! The Valentine 1 has saved me many a time....... like I said, I like to know when their around !! If there are several cars in a pack etc....... I know who they're going to pull over !!

Electronic Cops and Robbers!!!

Thanks Hogg.....a radar detector is only going to warn you if it picks up the signals from the radar that is being used a few miles down the road. If it's only you on the road, and I illuminate you, the only thing the detector will do is tell you to pull over.

A lot of traffic stops done for 'insignificant' reasons, like no signals, etc, are mainly a way to stop you in order to look for other crimes, like DUI. Being polite will probably get you a warning, but smarting off (Hey officer, you look like the guy in the picture on my girlfriend's nightstand) will not win you points.

Best bet? Stay with the pack, stay in lane, do what you can to not attract attention.....Rube

I am always polite to Police officers (I have quite a few Martial Arts students that are in Law Enforcement) This last ticket was pretty brutal, no chit chat, no questions, (accept if I had been drinking). I know I was speeding, but I don't think I was going 91 down some curvy road with a truck full of people tring to sleep.

I think I am going to have the ticket Laminated and put somewhere I can see it. That should keep me from having to MAKE the law pull me over

Unhappy bad cops

I'm not much of a cop fan. I find most of them to be arrogant and totally unable to be wrong. I personally think that most cops are in it for the power trip. The few I have known personally have never had a moment off duty....meaning that when they are off duty, they still act/think like they are in charge and policing the world....get a grip. They make mistakes like the rest of us...they just don't have to answer to the same laws. Most of all they hate it when we know our rights and stand up for them.

BTW now that i've stepped on someones toes, go right ahead and check me out....i'm clean.

All cops and law enforcement should be treated just like the rest of us. Including prison, not a country club because they are afraid that now they are going to jail the repercussions will catch up to them.

As far as i'm concerned they can bite me!

Talking Passport 8500

I own a passport 8500 with the fancy (smart?) cord and I cant complain! No tickets and plenty of advance warning! Like everyone else said, be aware when you drive and pay attention to the radar detector when it talks! Laser can be a bitch to catch if your not careful! My GF just got a DUI when we were coming home from a halloween party a little toasted. The best part is that we were less than 100 yards from out house. AND, he said the reason he pulled us over, get this, is that she stopped a whole 2 feet past the stop sign. Not becuase we were swerving, not because of speeding.......all I can do is laugh now...LOL!

watch it there Fepony, don't want to turn this thread into a flame now
Most of the cops around here in this town and the next town over are total aholes though. The one gave me a ticket for headlight covers in broad daylight when she flagged me into a checkpoint, but let the dodge right behind me with headlight covers go right through. then she tried to say my rims were illegal cuz they were too big. They actually had to call the base and have them call Ford motor to verify that the rims on my truck were stock Also, there's a really young cop up in town that just became one, and he's pulling anybody and everybody over, even giving some of his friends tickets because he said he wants to make a name for himself. He gave my one friend a ticket cuz his license plate lights were slighly red and not totally clear, but the reason they were slightly red is cuz he just had is car repainted a few months back, and never noticed the overspray on the license plate light lenses
But most of the cops that i know personally are really cool and not aholes at all. My one karate instructor is a state trooper, and about 3 of the other guys in the class are cops also and are all really nice. I also know a few other strate troopers who i detail their cars for them, and they are really nice, so i wouldn't say most cops are arrogant. Also Phillyrube, i met him for the 1st time at the mikes famous meet and he's a really cool guy

Most cops here are kinda ******. ( I am not saying all...but most) I have yet to meet one cool cop. I knew one guy who always went to my local dinner. It's like the cop hang out and I love their hamburgers. Well...one night I was lighting off fireworks and he came and said they were illegal. I was like "hey...I know you from starlite diner - you are there all the time" He had to have recognized but still was a **** and threatened to throw us in jail. WTF! Way to be a ****sucker!
