Angry Highway Bounce

On the highway I get a severe rear end bounce from 70-80 mph. It only happens with roads that have a slight wave to them. My 2001 had this same problem. Is this normal for a truck that stickers for $38000,or is there a fix.

Bouncing

Don't know if there's a fix, but this has happened on every truck I've owned from $2500 to $HD.

It's more pronounced in the HD because of the stiffer suspension. I did notice that if you slowly speed up over that part of the highway, the bouncing subsides a bit.

dropping my rear end 2" seems to have minimized the "lightweight" feel of the rear end on bumpy roads...

Additional weight

Adding a hard tonneau would probably help too. I have a camper and carpet kit on my other pickup and it doesn't bounce as much as it did before.

Yeah, I had a '98 Dakota R/T and let me tell you that truck would bounce all the way across the road when you hit a bump wrong. My family has owned two other F-150s and they both do it too. So I would say that it pretty much happens with every truck.

could just be your wheel balance is off a bit.
Just got the '00 HD less than a month ago, on the first test drive I took it out onto the highway and I started getting a bouncing/vibrating feeling in the cab, but not in the steering wheel (from about 60mph on up).
I had the dealership do a high speed balance on the wheels and now I don't have a problem taking it all the way up to 90-95mph or so (what's wrong with me???)

I know exactly what you are talking about. Here in Oklahoma we have the split concrete highways. The kind where the concrete is poured in about a 20 or 30 foot section. Just long enough for the front suspension to react to one seam while the rear suspension is reacting the other seam. It sucks. I have to set the cruise on 85 just to keep my teeth from chattering. I am hoping that once I get my shackles on it will help out a little bit. I had not thought about adding a cap on the bed. The extra weight might help out also.

Cool none so far

Well so far i've noticed nothing like that. The interstate between my house and my sons is I-10 and everyone runs at or about 80. So far i haven't had that happen to me. I've only had it to 107 mph so far so i am happy to say it was rock steady.

I am experiencing exactly same thing under exactly same speed. I am not experienced enough to talk with authority (this is my first truck ever and I have not sat in others under same or similar conditions) but I am tending to say that nothing is wrong with a truck, it is issue of surface you are riding on (bad surface is bouncing you up) and fact that every truck is lighter in rear when not loaded (there is not enough load pressing that tail down to keep it down).

So, give it bad surface and it will bounce all the time. Give it wavy surface and it will bounce at the certain speed range that depends on distance between slab joints on freeway/bridge. Give it even surface and it will run smooth all the way to point when speed limiter kicks in,

What you can do to minimize this? There is a good reading material under threads I started on this and other F150 board that are, I think, named 'Help rookie come up with mod strategy' or something like that (if you do search on threads started by me you will find them).

Have fun and drive safely!

there are shims on the bottom of the leaf springs in the back that might have been put on wrong. some guys that have done the drop shackles have had the bouncing and vibration problem, and flipping the shims solved their woes. i think that the shims stock have the fat end facing the front. maybe this will help.
