Rotor question
I noticed that while cleaning the rims that my rotors are rusty on the outter diameter. Looks like poo when the rims are nice and clean and you can see the rust!!!
Is there anyway I can keep this from showing/happening? Though about sanding and painting, but that seems like a pain!

Rotors..
The only way I know to keep rotors looking great on a vehicle that actually uses the brakes is to have them zinc-washed or similarly plated. I did this with my GMC Typhoon when I upgraded using the Baer Racing brakes and they looked good all pver. No rust, no muss and looked really good from under the wheels.
The idea of powder-coating the rotors is a non-starter if you put any real heat in the brakes, IMHO. I do have painted calipers on the S4 and Porsche- and they work great. I just left the calipers as-cast on the Typhoon.

I painted my calipers with silver rustoleum and its held up fine for the past 6-7 months. Next time i redo them (want to add some red) i'll probably sand down and try painting the edge of the rusty disc with the silver paint also.
Yeah, I just shot some high heat paint on mine as well. Just used flat black for now so you wouldn't see the rust through the rims. One day I will get in there and make them look a little better like HD356 or some of the others I've seen.
Decisions, decisions
I think I'm gonna go with the sanding and rustoleum route. I'm going to be rotating my tires soon, so I can make the excuse to do them then. Been contemplating painting the calipers too, but can't decide on a color. I like the silver and a harley orange, but don't want to draw attention away from the rims.
I spent 4 hours washing/cleaning the truck a few weeks ago and my wife had a fit. If she catches me painting the rotors, you won't see me on here for awhile. They don't have Internet access in ICU.
She also was upset that I stole her brush for washing our glassware. I found that it was the same diameter of the exhaust tips and made cleaning the inside really easy!
Thanks for the responses!

I saw the same problem with the front end tie rod ends, steering box, and the rotors. Used a rust converter called OSPHO on them. Spray it own, let it dry. then hit them all with high temp black. Looks much better, but with the rotors, probably have to redo thewm every 2 years or so. Mine are starting to look crappy, although not rusty......Rube

anyway, get pics if you do the rotors. i'll do mine this spring, along with a number of other stuff under the truck
Pics
I'll try to get pics. Unfortunately I don't have a digital camera yet. We're getting one for Xmas. I've been borrowing my in-laws camera for the pics I do have. I'll try to borrow the camera for this but doubt I'll have time. I have a wedding to go to on Saturday, and want to have this done by then.
We'll see. I'll definately have after pictures. The rust is real bad for some reason. I'm here in So. Cal where it rains once a year. Truck hasn't been in the rain, but once on a wet road.
Go figure.
4 hours is nothing now. My wife thinks I'm cheating on her with my truck.

aight, we've heard enough out of you.
LoL! j/k
anyway, let us know how everything goes with it, and what you all did to get them to turn out good, and hopefully some after pics. good luck!
Rain, rain go away
I wasn't bragging about not having rain. I actually love it when it rains. I'm like a little kid splashing through the puddles.
Used to drive my 79 Toyota 4x4 through puddles and try to fill the bed with water. Got a lot of people wet that way.

i know i was only messin with yaI like it when it is pouring rain out (that is if i didn't just finish washing teh truck
LoL) cuz then i'll ride my mountain bike up the street where they are doing construction and go mud riding
It makes a mess, but its fun juping my bike into a muddy dug out foundation with 4 feet of water and mud and having to almost swim out. LoL! Since i can't go offroading in my HD, i do it with my bike. LoL!

EDIT: Oh, by the way... on topic info... if anyone does powder coat their rotors, you'll want to do it with one of the higher temp coatings made for such things. The regular powder coating is only good to about 450-500 degrees max, and 400+/- sustained. The heavy duty stuff is good to 600+ and would live a much longer life than the normal coating. (used to run an online coating business until recently)
