Gettin the HD soon -- few questions

Well I finally got my chance tonite to drive an 02 HD --- LOVE IT -- hopefully I can sell my cougar soon since I cant wait to have that bad boy! However, I might have to wait for the 03s to come out...

anway in the meantime...

Ive been reading alot on this board and still have a few questions....

1. What are the main differences between the L's motor/tranny and the one in the 02 HDs?

2. I was thinking about the AF1 intake, Diablo Chip, L's upper pulley and the 6(possibly 8) # lower pulley .. would that combo work well or should I just leave the upper alone? If I change the upper what kind of gains would I expect over stock? Im basically trying to get the motor to "upgraded" L spec.

Thanks Alot and Im Lookin Forward to being on here more

As for question 1, the 40hp difference comes in 3 places of which two you can do something about. First, the blower pulley is different, second, the exhaust is shorter on the L, and third, the air intake in the front valance is bigger on the L allowing more air. I don't know of any tranny differences, but some of the other guys here will know. They can also help with question 2.

My HD is a 2001 so I am not up to speed on the 02 like most here are.

I have a 6lb lower, intake and diablo chip. I don't know the exact hp gain as I haven't had it dyno'd. I have been told that it is a gain of approx 60-80hp, don't know if that is true or not. I did not change the upper, I figured the 6lb lower was enough for a daily driver.

Thumbs up 8# lower

if 8# is used JLP says colder plugs and better air system should be strongly considered as well as a chip

Better do that with a 6 lber as well... Leave the upper pulley alone--add your boost with the lower. Smaller upper pulley means less contact area which can lead to belt slippage. Also have heard that unless the upper is pressed off perfectly it will damage the bearing. If you are fixated on changing the upper, remove the entire snout and send it to one of the reputable tuners and let them change it out. I would not do the 8 lb lower and an upper--too much boost, you will have problems.

Cool thanks alot guys ... i didnt know the upper was THAT hard to change... seeing that ive basically decided on:

1. 8# Lower
2. Diablo Chip
3. AF1 Intake
4. Valve Body Mod
5. Larger TB/MAF --- do they make them yet?

for an intake, rather than an AF1, i'd say get a JL ram air setup.

anyway, the major differences have already been hit, but a few were missed.

longer exhaust, and bigger upper pulley as mentioned, but also, the lower valance opening is smaller, but the gap between teh top of the bumper and bottom of the grille surround is a little bigger to allow more air in. Also, the hold in the fender where the intake attaches to is sligtly smaller on the HD, but can easily be drilled out bigger. Also, they have different tunes on the chips, and then 2 piece driveshaft on the HD, but you can swap that out for a one piece aluminum from a 00 or 01 HD like the L's have. Thats all i can thihnk of right now. good luck and congrats on the HD!!!

post pics/build#/color when you get it!

Big Ike how much did that little setup cost you?

What are the good websites where I can shop for upgrades like the chip, pulley and intake setup?

And how are you guys making these mods on the 2002s without grief from the dealers on the warranty?
I want to do the air intake, the pulley, and the chip, but I want to enjoy my 3/36 warranty.

HeHateMe,
I had the 6lb lower, airintake, chip, colderplugs, and FT valvebody done. (I did not feel like messing with it, because I don't have the space) I think it was around 1200, I don't have the receipt with me... Razor's Edge did the work. http://www.razorsedgemotorsports.com, I believe it's still under construction.

IS the engine really the same?

When DropTop ordered his new motor he said the part #s for a HD and L short block were different. I'm still looking into this but haven't gone very deep.

Any comments?

John
