Towing capacity

Hi All,

Hi All,

As you all know the 02 HD's have a towing capacity of about 4500lbs. I was told that if I installed a set of "helper airbags" they would increase the towing capacity. My truck has a 2" shackle drop and seems to sag when I tow. Does anyone have experience with them? And how much will they increase the capacity?

Thanks

BLWN_HD#34,

I have load leveling suspension (airbags) on my F250 and I don't believe they will help increase your towing capacity. Towing capacity is based on the strength of your drive line. The airbags will help your overall load capacity and will help maintain proper suspension geometry while loaded.

I'm having the same problem and seriously considering the same thing--rear airbags... not sure which ones. Gonna call some of the advertisers in Truckin' Magazine. Our trucks will definitely comfortably tow more than 4500 lbs--just gotta stay out of the boost when towing!

Hitch - What Kind?

Air suspension works great for ocasional heavy loads. I had it on a previousl vehicle and it worked really well. I was hauling a bunch of mulch and dirt with my HD last weekend and was surprised how much the rear ride height changed. I think it was about 4 inches lower than empty. I was thinking about 2 inch rear drop, but after the hauling experience, I'm not sure. Maybe I'll just do the rear sway bar.

So, what kind of trailer hitch did you all have installed? I'm trying to decide which one to install on my HD. Thanks.

croosr,

I installed the Ford hitch. I have a 2" drop on my truck already. I wonder if the bags will help while towing? Did you notice any change in the ride quality after the bags were installed?

BLWN_HD#34,

When I have my F250 loaded the "airbags" not only help to level the bed, they also help to maintain proper suspension geometry. The handling of my truck fully loaded is not much different than unloaded, except for longer stopping distance. In my opinion, the airbags will help tremendously while towing as you will maintain the proper suspension geometries. Good Luck!

Ford Hitch Part #?

#34,

On the Ford hitch, do you have a part number for this? Also, do you have a closeup photo of your hitch? Thanks.

Sorry, I don't have a part number. I'll try to get a pick up soon.

I believe the lowered tow rating is as a result of the wheel/tire combination. Ford rep gave me this information, so take it as you will. I believe the 1" drop would have more to do with the capacity.
