My rim is shedding
My rim is shedding
So Im walking out of my house to go to work this morning, and to my suprise I look down at my rims and the chrome is peeling off of one of them. I hope its covered in the bumper to bumper warranty. I guess I will ask about it when I take it back to have the rear window looked at, looks like the seal on one side is falling a little and I want to catch it before it causes problems.
Yeah, thats the rim.. the one thats behind the exhaust. I didnt even think about that until you said that, thats probably the reason why there is only one rim thats doing this. . I have a full bumper to bumper warranty, but I didnt get my truck from a ford dealership.... I stumbled upon this car on carmax's website one day and decided to scoop it up... so I dont know if the carmax bumper to bumper warranty would cover this. I would think it would though. it looks like there is a protective coating peeling off the rim.. I would hope its not the chrome itself, I would hope ford didnt make the rims so cheap.

I take it you must have a 1997. This was the only year that a factory exhaust was installed like this(in front of the rear wheel). If you have a 97 the time/mileage is up on your factory warranty so the only way you will get this covered is if you have an extened Ford warranty. The way it sounds you don't. Good luck in getting the wheel covered by Carmax warranty. I think your S.O.L. If you can get it covered by some one, great. Maybe its time to start looking to custom wheels & tires.

no, I have a 2000 f150 hd. wouldnt have posted this here otherwise
and at the time of purchase, I got an extended 5 yr 60,000 additional mile bumper to bumper warranty. Im not 100% sure if it was a carmax warranty, or if they get these warrantys from the actual dealers. but I would think either way, even if it was a carmax warranty, that they would take responsibility like it was their own vehicle. I could be wrong though, everyone knows car dealerships are mad shady.
Im going to go through my papers tonight, I think I remember them saying ford will still cover things under the bumper to bumper warranty.

Your profile says that your truck is a SuperCrew. Is that a mistake? If not, you don't have a Harley truck. 2001 and 2002 are SuperCrews.

meant to say supercab
thanks for pointing that out. I just filled out my profile quickly, didnt go back and check it
oh another thing to point out, sorry for saying the exhaust is before the rear wheel too I think I said that anyway. I meant behind.. Im very tired today. but it is that rim (the rear passenger-side) that is peeling.

Clonetec,
Yes I know about the L's exhaust but, I also knew that the only other production truck Ford made with the exhaust in front of the rear wheel was the 97 F-150 or 97 F-250 light duty & that is what he said he had.
He didn't say what year or what he had for a truck. Sorry I didn't check his profile.
ShiftyBeeker,
Just an FYI, not everyone knows all car dealers are mad shady. I am a Ford dealer & I'M HERE TO HELP. So please, don't lable all of us.
Thanks

no problem , thats why I didnt use the word 'all'
. just said they were. at least all the ones Ive dealt with, and its very frustrating so its easy to label.
well, then in your opinion, what do you think would happen about this?? and do you know if a dealership would replace the rim under full bumper to bumper warranty?? do you know if those rims have a protective coating over them, or are they chrome plated?
its all good, my profile was wrong anyway, someone else pointed that out to me

I looked up a Ford Premium Care(best warranty you can buy from Ford) & the wheel is not covered. You can however go to your dealer & he should be able to take care of the wheel under the corosion(sp) warranty. That is 5 years from the date of warranty start date. Good Luck.
Just an FYI, I or a lot of Ford dealers don't do bussiness with aftermarket warranty's, I've been left out to dry too many times.
BTW if your off Ford warranty, you maybe SOL on the rear window seal also. Unless he will cover it under a after warranty adjustment.

This is a big problem for me too. I noticed it last year and now all four of my stock rims look like sh..! The top layer peeled off all over them and the black undercoating shows. It is u...g...l...y! So I need to buy new rims now which I would not have just to make my truck look normal. I am Ford for life but lately there are a few things on my three Fords that show how willing they are to cut costs by sacrificing quality. Let's hope the 'new' Ford remembers how they built their reputation.
Sorry to sound grouchy about this but last year on the same truck my tie rod broke while driving 40 with my wife in the passenger side. You can't imagine what that is like. All of a sudden I was riding a bucking bronco and thank God we didn't move into the opposite lane of traffic because I could barely control the rig with one tire facing left. When I found ou there was a Canadian class action law suite started over this I was ripped. The replacement tie rods were much better than the ones that failed. You can read about this issue right here on this forum. We need Ford to help keep the foreign makers at bay and that will require SAFETY and QUALITY. Again...I am Ford for life and have an Escape and Mustang but so far Mustangs are the only Fords I never run into issues with.
