Keeping tips clean
Keeping tips clean
Hey Guys,
After 800 miles I've gone through almost a jar of chrome cleaner on the exhaust tips. They pick up all the wash from the rear tire and all the tar and grunge just stick to the hot pipes.
Any suggestions short of moving the tips to custom dual rear outlets, or mudflaps?
So far, Maguires all metal polish seems to keep them clean the longest as long as it doesn't rain. When they get wet -forget it.
Regards,
Frank

I use Ceramabryte on the tips. Cleans off everything, including the rusty colored chit, dirt, black crap and everything in between. Doesn't really give a high polish on my aluminum tips, but makes them damn good, clean and spotless. Rather inexpensive. It's a stove top cleaner mainly used for porcelin and such. Found some in Safeway, but I gather any real hardware store would carry it in their cleaner dept, or appliance dept. But it works great on removing exhaust dirt and stains like a charm.
Don't know how it works on crome tips, cause I only have the stock aluminum tips. If yours are chrome, the best thing to use is FINE steel wool. Trust me, works like a beaut. Using the fine steel wool with some soap and water will take off EVERYTHING and won't scatch. But make sure you use the fine stuff.
Good luck out there soldier.

yeah i've heard bout the steel wool thing too. they said just make sure it has at least four zero's. I use mothers mag and aluminum polish and it works great. it takes some rubbing but its worth it. one of my rims came all dull and pitted, and the mothers fixed it right up. The 00's and 01's came w/ molded mud flaps and they stop alot of the dirt from getting on the pipes and flinging up on the paint. they also make harley molded flaps too. good luck. ya got a gallery?

I use Mother's as well. Does a terrific job on the wheels, tips, and nerfbars. Caution, don't let it freeze. It turns into useless, yellow, goo. (Note to self #273,781).

Well I've tried a number of things to combat tip spoilage! I even tried to polish the tips first and then add Rain-X to them to get the road water spray to bead off...
I'm still working on it...

P.S. I've got some new stuff called Butchers Stainless Steel Cleaner & Polish. It's supposed to be excellent for chrome also for a deep luster. It removed soil and water spots too...
As you can see, I get crap on my tips from my own driveway...Grrrr
I'm gonna test it tommorrow... Raining today...=(
