4r70w or 4r100

Question for all you harley supercrew owners. Which automatic transmission does your truck have? My HD has the 4r70w, but I was reading over in the supercrew board that some guy has the 4r100 in his. I find this distressing and would like to know which tranny you all have. Did I get ripped off by not getting the bigger tranny?! Thanks,

Dale

PS - probably the easiest way to tell what tranny you have is to check the label on your B pillar when you open the driver's door. Tranny code for 4r70w is U and for the 4r100 it is E.

How do you know for sure it is a 70? That would be the first I've heard of. How many bolts on the pan?

While on break, I crawled under my truck. Counted 14 bolts on my transmission pan. How many should there be?

That's pretty strange. The build sheet the dealer showed me assured me that it would come with the 100 and it did. When was your build date? Mine was 4/2/01. I sure can't figure how Ford puts parts on some of these trucks.

So whats the consensus on the transmission?

Im going to head out this afternoon and crawl under the truck on lunch to look at both that..and the mysterious Dual small auxilliary radiators on my truck.

What exactly indicates a 70 vs a 100 trans? Just the bolt pattern?

The code on the B pillar should be e for a 100 and there is like 20 or 21 bolts to the tranny pan. The 70 is a code u and only 14 bolts. Like I said before, I checked a lot before I bought as I wanted the heavier unit. I looked through all the stuff with the sales guy and it indicated the heavier tranny, 4r100. That is why I'm surprised that some come out with the 70. Glad I got what I wanted anyhow.

As for the cooler, I think you were the one I had talked to before about that. Mine does not have a tranny cooler, only the power steering cooler. I might put an aftermarket cooler on. I checked with Ford parts desk about a kit and they show the cooler but they can't give me numbers for all the lines, they say they make them up from bulk. That's bull, you look at a Lightning etc. and their lines are nice custom units. I hated incompetent parts people.

Well doesnt today just suck

So I go out to the truck...and sure enough the Trans code is a U. Blah

So i crawl under the front of the truck..and pull away the plastic valence on the bottom and expose both of the smaller "radiators"

The one on the drivers side is very small..perhaps 3" by 8" and is not encased in a protective cover like most radiators......its also rather banged up from something..Ill fix that later. Well..it has two insulated hoses that head right under the power steering pump. I can see the main feed line of the power steering pump and it is a separate hose..but I cannot tell where it goes.

So it is indeed possible that this is the power steering fluid cooler....odd.

The passenger side cooler is a more robust ~and larger~ model, Its two hoses pass alongside the oilpan and I lose them after that. So this is indeed an oil cooler..however there is no telling what sort of oil it cools...Trans..or Engine

Id be willing to bet its engine oil.

Maybe they put the oil coolers on the 70's and not the 100's. That might explain why. I also know that when I ordered my, I made special reference on the build sheet for the 44e package which was to be the heavy duty tranny. I still have all those sheets as a matter of fact. Strange how they build these things.

My truck was built in 02/01. Maybe Ford switched to the 4r100 in later production models? Maybe in anticipation of the upcoming supercharger? Anyway, I climbed under my truck again to look at the additional two small radiators. Appears to me that one is indeed a power steering fluid cooler, and the other a tranny fluid cooler. The one on the passenger side has lines that run all the way back to the tranny.

I just noticed that you both have 2001 Screws.

I only have a 2000 Scab...perhaps that is the difference?
