Hey all - newbie here. Have a 2000 F-150 HD and already went thru 1 rear end and I believe I will be in need a 3rd one now.

My question was this: If I need to get a new one, should I upgrade? (Can I upgrade?) I think I have 3:55's (right?), but maybe 3:73's? Anyone out there using that ratio and liking it?

Would appreciate any opinions/comments. Am totally clueless.

what's your axle code? I believe it should have 3.73 limited slip.



why are you burning thru rear ends? the 9.75 is stout plenty of people are pushing insane power thru them without issue.

is there a leak that isn't getting fixed?
are you towing insane loads?
what size rims and tires are you running?
are you having any transmission issues?
what mods have you done to the drivetrain/suspension?
is your pinion angle off?
is there excessive vibrations while driving?
any funny noises?
has the truck been involved in an accident?
Has the truck hit a curb with either of the rear wheels?

there's more information that we need before we can help you out. most people are happy with the 4.10 gears even with stock wheels and tires.

Yes, there is a leak and it is now fixed.
Not towing
Stock rims and tires
No tranny issues
No significant mods - only throttle body spacer, ram air, shocks
Don't know if pinion angle is off, but some say the drive shaft isn't exactly straight - other's say it is normal and that the "pencil" test is BS.
No vibrations
Yes, funny noises, but it was just the front sway bar mount and rear end noisy cause of leak (I assume).
No accident
Has it hit a curb with either of the rear wheels? Sure, but nothing over 3 or 4 mph.

look at your drivers door jamb with the info label on it.

is your truck lowered at all (rear drop shackles or hangers)?

did you replace your complete axle or just the internals? what caused the axle to need to be replaced the first time?

Ok, I'll look and report back later.

Truck is not lowered at all. Still stock.

Replaced complete axle with housing.

I have no idea what cause the first replacement - it simply broke at 89,000mi.

After further investigation, my rear end is ok - the seal didn't hold and I lost my fluid and thought my rear end went out again due to the same noises, etc. Sealed with silicone and let dry 24 hours before replacing fluid and additive(s).
