Unhappy Dealer trying to rob me?

I had a small encounter with a mound of snow and ice. When I hit the ice with my right front, the bracket holding on the fog light broke. The fog light itself is fine. The dealers says that the only way to get a new bracket is to order a complete fog light and that costs $200! This seems very high to me, can anyone check out dealers cost on this item?

Right fog light and bracket for a 2002 HD? Thanks guys.

I hate to say it, but that is probably the correct price. It's been a while, but you might try a search on the topic. There were quit a few threads a while back, about the brackets breaking on their own. The bracket and light are made together, and can't be seperated. So far, I haven't heard of a cheaper alternative...

yup....happened to me. Driving down the road...pull into home depot, and some guy tells me my foglight is hanging by the wires. i never hit anything or noticed if snap off, must have just been vibratiosn that did it or something. but they are some pretty fragile cheap brackets.

went to the dealer, they only can replace them as a whole new assembly. 200 bucks
the guy goes out and checks out my bumper.....no damage so its covered under warranty!
alot of guys have had this problem, and just about every one so far that i've heard of got it covered under warranty.

before you go in though, just unplug the foglight and keep it. tell them it just fell off. that way they will replace the whole thing, and not return your stock light to ford, which they are required to do if its still hanging there. that way if you do get a cracked fog light lense or something, you have a spare and don't have to shovel out 200 bucks cuz the lense isn't covered under warranty

goodluck....hope ya read this before you dump out the bucks for a new one!

Yep, have to order the complete assembly. Mine snapped off while driving as well. I took it to the dealer and said it fell off and they covered it under warranty. If needed, clean up the surrounding valance panel since they will likely take a close look at it to determine if it was caused by an accident or something.

In my case, the lamp snapped off clean and did not do any damage to the valance so it was easy for the dealer to tell that it was a part defect.

Good luck and keep in mind that sometimes playing dumb will work in your favor!

The truck is already at the dealer, so it's a little late to play dumb. Since the break was right at the top where it bolts to the valance, I will try fixing it using some metal "L" brackets. There is plenty of plastic left on the fog light bracket to attach to. If I fail, I guess I'll just pay the piper.

Thanks for all the suggestions. There are some marks on the valance, so I probably couldn't have got it repaired for free anyway. I didn't really expect to get it free, but I about fell over when he said $200.

Yep, 356 beat me to it. Take it to another dealer. You do not have to go the dealer you bought it from to have warranty work done.

That's a heck of a lot of money to replace when you can get it done under warranty with no out of pocket.

Well, I bought some metal "L" brackets last night and after an hour of work with the dremel, I have a system that should work. I need to go back to Home Depot tonight and pick up some longer screws and some black spray paint.

2 "L" brackets - $3.44
6 1/4" screws - $1.67
6 nylon threaded bolts - $2.15
Telling the dealer to go shove his $200 foglight - priceless.
