Here are some pics of my custom ram air intake.
Cost breakdown:
3" aluminum dryer hose - $4.00
Large vacuum attachment - $10.00
Dryer hose attachment thingy - $2.00
I started by marking the size of the hole, then drilling the hole with a 'hole-saw'.
I had to make the hose more oval in some places so it wouldn't interfere with the fans or pulleys.
The dryer attachement (or "High Performance Scoop" as I call it) is attached to the truck underneith the intercooler. There is a perfect little flatbar strip that has holes already in it. The hose is attached to my High Performance Scoop using a hoseclamp.

you can see that I flipped the filter around when I noticed how dirty it was getting on one side

Looks great! 
just curious though, wouldn't it have been easier to go through the inner fender shroud, where the opening is at the bottom and right up to the bottom of the intake box rather than that way around? i'm not sure on this cuz i haven't looked around under my engine bay in a while to see about a ram air tube, but i'd think it would be a route with less turns and no chance of hitting the fan or pullies.
again, i'm not positive about this, but just curious cuz through the fender well is where most guys go through

To me it looked a lot more difficult to go that way. I would also need to have the hose make more turns to get the scoop where I wanted it. Right now it is a tight fit, but it works fine.
In the future I plan on making a custom scoop from sheet metal. That way it can be a lot larger, and I plan on making it so that it will deflect some air up to the intercooler.
BTW, I left the stock air intake as it was. I figure that if the ram air is too much (going FAST), the excess air will blow out through there. Also, if for some reason the scoop gets submerged, I am not going to suck water up it like a straw.

This is very close to what I did on my 2001 L. A local guy made a fancy aluminum adaptor plate for the stock airbox. We then ran a 4" tub to the front.
For the HD, I will be doing something similar. I probably have the same 3" hose 4WL has. I have a different way of attaching it to the box though. I'll post up pics when I do the install.
