Question Dealer Paint and Fabric Protection

What is it and how much SHOULD it cost?

My wife and are looking at a new Taurus for her (I hit a deer and totaled her old one), and the dealer (not Ford) has added the 10 year paint and fabric protection. The initial cost was $399, which was quickly dropped to $299. A 33% markup (IF $299) pisses me off to begin with, but I'm guessing it's more than that. I doubt if it was dropped to cost.

Is this anything more than ScotchGaurd and a wax job?

I can't haggle with the guy over the price of the car because I get A plan. But I would like to know what this cost him.

I posted this in the general care category, but I wan't getting any replies. Hopefully more people will see it here.

All that stuff is extra dealer padding, nothing more, nothing less.

Buy a can of scotch guard for $10 and do it yourself every year.
As far as the paint protection.... "Baaawk"

Keep it clean and wax it regular, save your hard earned $$ for more meaningful things.

My 2 cents.

I agree, I wouldn't have this done if the choice was up to me, but the dealer has already applied it.

Now I'm trying to figure out what it is, and how much it is really worth. Is it anything more than the dealer's techs scotchgaurding the interior and applying a coat of wax to the exterior?

If it is what I think it is, the paint protection is a product that a friend of mine gave me. He sells it to Dealers. Its made by Simoniz or Turtle Wax, I don't remember exactly. It consists of a small bottle of wash, which I think he said renders a positive charge on the paint surface. There is also a small bottle of wax, that contains teflon and is negatively charged, thus creating a bond between the two.

The way he presented it to me, it was a wax that was supposed to last 12 months. I have the bottles somewhere, haven't applied it yet.

Not sure this is what you are talking about, but he said the dealers sell it for $100 (Not sure if it includes application or you just get the two bottles).

As for the fabric, its just Scotchguard. I wouldn't have it done, but he's only got $35 plus labor in it max, ... there are plenty of dealers in Indy and there's got to be another Taurus somewhere in Indiana just like it.

Once I mentioned going somewhere else, the interior and paint protection was dropped completely, and he is willing to deliver it to me. it's not a short distance either - it's a good hour to 1.25 hours to my house from the dealer.
this guy is really trying to make a sale.

36 fan,

The dealer cannot add this if you don't want it.
They will try to tell you they don't have a choice, but this is BS.
Like the previous poster said, if they won't deal fair, then take a walk. Other dealers will be happy to make a quick sale on A plan.

Ford only made a gazzilion Taurus's, I'm sure if you look around, you can buy what you want without the 'mandatory add ons"

Good luck!
