I am an Individual contributor....

I have tried to get work done in Vegas in the Hotel industry to see the Unions drive up costs and slow down or prevent work. Saw same in chemical plants, papermills, steel mills, grocery stores etc, etc. I saw union concrete workers up north getting trained by the union on how to work 6 month s in summer and scam the system all winter. There was work to do they just didnt want to have to work outside in snow. If you can make enough in summer to ski all winter that is great. But to offer training on how to NOT work 6 months of the year and rely on the rest of u to support you Pisses me off...

MANY times I would see Union rules be thrown around in circumstances where NO rule existed or the union had no say... But the union folks would use the word union as a Threat - Hoping no one would question them.

Many of the defects and irregularities we see in our trucks are due to / as result of union work....

I need to see if there is a keyboard users union... Maybe Clonetek and I can organize and threaten to strike against Steve unless we get better working conditions and pay...

Doug

Proud member since 1977 of Teamsters Local 107, Philadelphia,Pa. I hate to admit it , I only have an 11th grade education, but I am able to, own my home, have a Lightning, F-150 beater for work,'02 Expedition for my wife, and vacation around the country and world. I would have none of these things without union wages.By making good wages I am able to spend and keep the economy going. People that make peanuts spend peanuts and the economy falls

wydopnthrtl, you are right on. American apathy is rampant, and people don't understand that they have to take control of their lives instead of waiting for someone else to change it for them. If you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem. I understand it's important to support your family, make the mortgage, etc, but if you're not happy with your job and you continue to endure the abuse... who can you really blame but yourself? Doug is right... you're probably better off going to work somewhere else that will treat you better.

The post about priorities says it all. If you want to be happy at a secure, safe job that is rewarding and has long-term career potential, then you may want to give up the Lightning and make a few short term sacrifices for significant gains in the long haul. If the Lightning is more important, then by all means continue working at your current job and we'll wish you the best of luck. Only you can make those kinds of decisions.

Unions do not drive up the cost to line their members pockets, the cost is higher
do to medical benefits, pension, annuity, and vacation. I do not beleive that any
union teach there employees how to scam 6 months out of the year that
is a crock, If there is any doubt that unions are out to scam and steal
I will give a telephone number of my colleage who,s son is dying of cancer
thanks to his union brothers for collections and thanks to excellent union
benefits his wife and his boy can live out the rest of his short life without
the extra burdens of huge medical bills!!! and some scab company benfits
unions are not for everything but in construction it is a nessesity!!!!!

Remember the commercial with frying pan with the eggs dropped in it. Here's a twist:

This country was built by hard working Americans (your brain).

This country was built by unions (brainwashed by unions).

IMO unions are good most of the time if you are a worker and if you are an employer it isn't such a good thing. The union to work good must have the power to stand up and protect it's members. The last three years I worked for UPS as a union employee I didn't do much work and didn't have to because I was protected.

I am in the job I am today and earn the salary that I do because I earned it, not because some union "negotiated" it. Why should some lazy slacker get paid the same as someone who works their butt off just because the union "negotiated" everyone's pay? If you can't succeed in life without the union "negotiating" everything for you, tough. You don't deserve what you have. Union management has proven time and again to be just as crooked as business management. I have worked at several places where no matter what the deadline or criticality of the job, when it came time for a break or eight hours were up, the union workers were gone leaving the rest of us (non-union) to continue. Also, as far as I am concerned, public safety employees, health care providers, etc. should have no right to strike and place others at risk.

Thier are slackers in every union, and just like a non union job
if you dont produce you will get laid off, Union workers EARN every cent they make
and there employer reaps every dollar thier skilled tradesman makes them.

Yes. I followed the contract UPS signed and agreed to follow. Companies have a choice to agree to a contract or not to agree.

Unions are part of American culture. Much can be said
PRO and CON about them. One of the reasons that the
longshoremen were striking was because technological
improvements would have reduced the required workforce
that is used to off-load our imports. (Never mind about
WHY we have so many imports .. that's another thread!)

So, in the end, your either a left-leaning, democratic,
socialist union type,
or
a hard-scrabble, made-it-on-my-own, conservative republican
type.

Ya pays your money and you makes your picks....

My $0.02 cents worth ...

PS... ASIDE from the Hoffa's, do you know of ANY Union
people that have become millionaires working FOR any
company? Most small and medium business owners just
make it on their own gonads ... A union would put most of them
in a non-competitive situation, and THAT is why there aren't
anymore manufacturing jobs in the U.S.

PPS.... very interesting thread Wendy ...

Why do people hire attorneys? Because attorneys know the law and the system. Why should employees who are being treated unfairly hire a union? Because unions know the law and the system.

Anyone should be allowed to work or not work. This includes health workers and police and anyone else for that matter. Is this a free country?
