Question Have any of you worked (work) at a automotive factory?

I may have the opportunity to work at Nissan as a production
technician on the assembly line. Anybody got any info on this
type work. Good, bad, or whatever! Thanks!

I tell you what. Make sure you build them better than Nissan did in the late 80s. My bad experience with a 1985 Nissan has sworn me off foreign cars.

I had a 1985, bought it new for $25k. First year, the power steering rack leaked fluid. The seals had gone bad.

Later on, the tranny blew while I was rushing to the airport. Had to call one of my employees to come get me and take me to catch the flight. Had to be towed.

Was pulling into a dui roadblock and the rear brake caliper falls apart and I almost run into the car ahead of me. Had to be towed.

Was driving home at night and the lights started dimming. Alternator blew. Was towed back.

A/C condenser leaked.

A/C evaporator leaked.

A/C compressor seized.

In 1987, I bought my first Ford. Best money ever spent on a vehicle. A 4x4 Lariat RC 5.8L auto. etc. By 1989, I only drove the truck. I have yet to be towed or stranded in a Ford truck.

No kiddin'....

they sucked throughout the 80's, but it is MUCH different now.
I was very impressed with the facilities and the people there.
Nissan wasn't the only motor company in the 80's that produced
some duds though. I seem to remember a few fords and chevs
that also sucked.

Not to sway this away from the original question but, I believe all the manufacturers out there have their problems. It's a fact when mass manufacturing plays into the equation.

As far as auto manufacturing facilities -- No, I've never worked for/in one however, I have worked with several facilities that manufacture components for the auto industry (ie Throttle assemblies for Toyota, wheels for Ford/Chevy/Toyota, Engine mounts for Caterpillar/Mack Trucks, etc...). What I've seen is a huge emphasis on quality. There is alot of competition out there that makes these manufacturers strive to achieve high marks. The introduction of the ISO/QS 9000 series brought alot of this to the manufacturing floor to achieve quality. Now, with the ISO 14000 series (environmental), we're seeing a large push for environmental quality, consistancy, and compliance.
