Thumbs down High Triglicerides...

Damn quacks! I've got high triglicerides I found out yesterday, which means I have to give up whole milk, cheese, and fast foods.... <growls> or else I might be prone to heart disease. Looks like veggies and fruits are in order.

Try cutting the carbs and eat more fish. I eat fish at least 2 times a week and have been since I was a child. The fattier the fish, the better.

You still drink whole milk? Try skim, 1%, or 2% milk instead. I can't stand whole milk anymore.

My cholesterol has never been over 190 and the ratio is excellent.

Forgot to mention that you should have a followup blood test to verify the results of the first. Cholesterol levels go up and down a lot, so you need to have more than one test to find out where you are really at.

LOL! Maybe we should contact your dad to see what you wrote about doctors.

I just got the same test and my tri's are off the map! It runs in my family so instead of killing me on the diet because I already drink skim milk (Have for over 10 years) and I work out 2-3 times a week. So my doc put me on some heavy duty meds and will re-evaluate in 3 months.

If it runs in your family you will have a very hard time getting the numbers down with diet and exersise alone. Unless of course you just eat broccoli and salmon every single meal for the rest of your life!!

Good luck-

I had the same thing last year, Trigs 303, Chol 295. My first response to the Dr was "Who's blood did you test?"

Dr indicated that 1 of 10 can reduce either one by diet modification. He also said that since I need to reduce each by at least a third, it was unlikely that diet would help.

I was on a low carb, low fat diet for 8 wks, walking briskly 2 miles at lunch and 2 miles after dinner. Meat portions were 4oz a day and if you go to the pantry and look, just about everything has carbs in it. You can eat anything that is green though...

I lost 25+ lbs (5'10" 192 to start).

Retested and my Trigs were 107 and Chol 185.

No explanation was given. I will be getting tested again soon.

A good dietician can help you try to modify your diet.....

Oh, yeah, what scares me more than the heart disease is high Trigs are an indicator of diabetes in later life if not addressed.....

Sorry to hear about that flea. Mine was high three months ago when I had a physical. Mind you, I'm only 25. I really need to get a grip on it...

Heck man, maybe you've eaten too many Hondas.

Good luck with that... know that you're not alone.

Yeah, I know what you mean flea. I just got mine about two weeks ago. I have high cholesterol at 261. I am only 29 and I hardly ever eat junk food, no fries, or sweets. My good cholesterol is low too. The doctor said in my case just to exercise more and eat sources of the good cholesterol. It scared the crap out of me so I have been working a lot and walking a lot.

Think I'll give that Salmon and broccoli diet a shot.

High Triglicerides run in my family too. I had mine checked awhile back and everything was ok including my cholesterol. Thank God. Heart disease runs in my family also. I think it's also associated with high triglicerides. So I better take care of myself.

My mother has high cholesterol because of heredity. Her Dr. prescribed the drug Lipitor and that drug put a small spot on her liver, which later healed after she stopped taking the drug. Just exercise and keep track of it. I think there is too much emphasis on cholesterol levels and the drugs that these Dr.s get kickbacks from. Side effects of drugs like Lipitor are liver damage.

I have heard of stuff like this too (third hand). I also know of many, many people who use Lipitor to control their cholesterol and triglicerides and it work great, me included. I was at about a 275-280 for cholesterol and my triglicerides were all the way off the chart. Today taking one little pill every day my cholesterol is 127 (yes that 127 is not a typo) ans my tri's are exactly where they are supposed to be. The best part is I can (and do) eat anything I want. All drugs aren't bad for you.

200 grams or 7 ounces of both per day should do it.
If all people in the world would take this advice, it would be much appreciated by the growers.

Serious, if everyone would follow this advice in Holland, the number of deaths by a heartdisease and cases of cancer would decrease by 8100 and 12000 per year on a population of 16 million people.

Therefore my advice to you is buy

and

The only thing is "You are what you eat." That's why I tend to avoid fruits.

I can hear the laughing starting already but here it goes. Try Metamucil. My cholesterol level dropped 20+ points and has stayed there by drinking Metamucil once a day. The fact that it keeps things flowing out the southern end on a regular basis is a nice side benefit.

But some are, like Lipitor. I'd be getting that Liver checked if you've been taking it for over a year.
