tundra vs. F-150

It has been 8 days with the new Tundra. Here are some observations so far comparing the two.

engine---4.7 vs. 4.6, the toyota will aboslutely roast the 4.6. I had no idea that an engine could be that much better. the 4.7 idles, responds, and pulls exactly as it should.

transmission---- the toyota has an old fashioned truck type of shift, firm and sure, NO lagging like MY F-150 seemed to do. It also responds well to towing holding the shifts off a little to compensate for extra load.

interior--- F-150 had better sounding stereo and better cupholders, toyota has power recliner and real power lumbar like Ford used to have. The toyota seats are perfect. Leather is much better quality on Toyota. Otherwise materials, fit and finish are very close on the two. toyota has better switches and much better air vents with way more adjustment.

exterior--- the fit and finish are slightly better on toyota, not much, but better. better features like front and rear mudflaps, fog lights on 2wd, and more body side molding.

misc--- the turn signal switch on the tundra does not have to be forced to stay on on awkward turns. It does not self cancel until you actually make a turn. the tundra 12v power outlets do not stay on with the key off which is annoying as hell. toyota has a great front loading 6 disc changer right in the dash. the clock in the tundra is located in the stupidest spot they could dream of.

overall--- even though the tundra was targeted at F-150 buyers, it really isn't. The tundra has an athletic feel to it. When you hit the gas it's gone, when you turn the wheel it moves. There are no indecisive shifts, no waiting around for 3000 rpms for the power rush and no planning lane changes. It is more obvious to me that the F-150 is built to appeal to the masses. It is somewhat lethargic and mopey compared to the tundra. the tundra draws a crowd like no one has seen one before. It's amazing what people say about it. wow!--" hey that the kind of truck that beat me the other day" "I hear those trucks are pretty quick" " that truck is gorgeous" The secretary where I used to work gave me a kiss on the cheek and congratulated me for buying it.

I really thought I was gonna pick this thing apart when I bought it. I always had Ford trucks. I am surprised every time I drive the Tundra. I did not post this to start a war of slam Ford. I just wanted to everyone to know that the Tundra is no where near the underachiever that a lot of people think it is. I was one of the biggest naysayers in the beginning. As it turns out, everything I saw wrong with the tundra has turned in to a solution. I thought it was too small, it's not, it's perfect. the bed is not too shallow, it's just right to reach items on the bottom without a step or climbing in. I thought the depth from top to bottom of the cab was too shallow, it's not, it's perfect because it places your legs out more in front of you and brings the hump in the floor with in arms reach without bending down. It makes the F-150 seem too big.

If ford ever made an F-150 that took some cues from the tundra, especialy the engine and transmission, I think most of you would want to be buried in it. the tundra really is an amazing machine

Job!!??

Did Toyota give you a job along with the truck when you bought it. Compare the room inside please-- no contest F150 WINS. Give us a break, and drive your Toy -- (as in not a real full size truck and Why I bought mine) on over to the toy truck site and tell them all this stuff -- so they feel real good and cozy about buying their toys too!! -- Sorry every one has their opinions -- that is mine. Toys are good trucks -- maybe one day they will grow up and be a fine "real full size truck"

PS - I am not a foreign vehicle hater -- I also have (we) a 2001
Accord.

Tundra's are OK if that's what you like. Heck, any car or truck is absolutley fine. If that's what you like. They all have their different feature's and whatnott's, that's what set's them apart. There are alot of good things I can say about my Ford F-150. It has'nt given me any problems. It's a good looking truck. It's roomy. And has pretty good power. Enough for me anyway. That's what I like. And that's my opinion. Just exorsizing my freedom of choice. Heck, let the man "splurge" a little. No harm done.

ONce again, I have been a member of this site for more than three years. I am not out to start a war or a pissing contest. I am just pleasantly surprised with my tundra and wanted to share it. It is not perfect, but certainly different.

Congrats on your new Tundra seacrow. That was the point I was trying to get across. I like Ford's. I like Tundra's too. I like anything that has 4 wheels(almost). But when Markmizzou told you to take your conversation elsewhere (as to a toyota website) I did'nt like that. I was only trying to back you up dude. I know you've been a member of this website for a long while. I hope it stays that way. Regards, Joe.

Seacrow, thank you for sharing with us!
People obviously don't realize that you had an F150 that was a POS. There is nothing saying that auto makers can't make a better truck than Ford.
I think the Tundra seems like a real good truck. Since they arrived in the market I have been curious about the feel of the I-Force 4.7. It makes complete sense that it would be more powerful and respond better than the 4.6. It is a better engine. Toyota was smart not opting for the "slush" shift in the transmission. If someone wants smooth shifts, buy a Buick!
Toyota has made some quality vehicles. My mother owned a Tercel and a pick-up in the late '80s. They were pretty tight vehicles.
I certainly don't take offense that you have purchased a Toyota Tundra. I like Ford trucks. I would like to continue to buy them. I wish that they would pay attention to what the auto makers are doing though. If they continue on the path they have been following we will have the same old, same old. Ford is capable of building the best truck out there, they just don't do it. It is producing for the masses. We end up with some watered down version of a pick-up. If they don't make some changes soon there will be many that explore the options.
This is a Ford truck site but it doesn't mean that we should be narrow minded.
Congratulations on the new truck seacrow! You have been through so much BS with your Ford, it's about time you got something you're happy with!
I realize that the Fords have some stiff competition. That is one of the things that influenced me to modify. I think my 4.6 could give a Tundra a run for the money now!

Most foreign cars share the same characteristics. They'll run for a long time, hell you could rip the intake off them and they'll still run, god knows why but they do. LOL. But a downside to that is when they do break down or need an alternator or starter replaced it can cost a hell of a lot. I stop by at a local battery place to shoot the sh*t with some buddies that work there and a guy was in the other day with some German vehicles (forget what) anyway he needed 2 new starters and the combined cost was a little over 600 bucks. Hell I could get 4 starters for that and have some change. I just don’t like foreign cars because there isn’t enough room for my damn long legs. So anyway have fun with your new truck.

I can agree with you on everything but the fit and finish. I just like the Ford better. But congrats on the truck anyway. At least you did buy a truck.

I think the Tundra is a little small for me, not quite full size like they say. They aren't terribly bad looking, but I'm just not into foreign vehicles. Whatever floats your boat.

seacrow...

Glad to hear that your Tundra has suited you quite well. When I was looking for a truck, I *almost* fell in love with a 2000 Tundra 4x4 loaded. It was a demo with 5K on it, and it was about $6k off what new ones were going for. The truck was very well put together, but it was just too small for what I needed. I pull 2 horses in a 4K pound trailer with about 500-1000# of tack in it. The Tundra would have been over it's limit, and I wouldn't have felt comfortable towing in a truck smaller than an F-150. It's still sometimes a bit unnerving with my truck. All in all, I'm glad that your ordeal is finally over and you have a truck you love. Be sure to stick around.

I was in a similar situation til yesterday. I've been looking for a new truck for a while and almost decided on a Tacoma or a Tundra. I had '01 Harley but I needed a "work" truck that I wouldn't mind throwing in a load of topsoil and then just hosing it off - rather than carting out the car care stuff to re-detail the truck. :o But in the end, I went with another Ford, a Estate Green '02 King Ranch, extended cab. It's got a bigger bed, and for whatever reason, I don't think I'd cringe everytime I get some mud on it, like I used to do with my '01 Harley.

Tundra is a nice truck. Its V8 is nice, and ride quality is really nice. But I guess I'm a Ford man enough that I always come back to Ford, if all things being same, or at least similar.
