I need a math expert

I need some math experts here to help my out and review how I am calculating my MPG data.

I've been keeping accurate fuel records since taking delivery of my truck.
When I work out the math, I've been getting 11.8 miles to the US gallon.
I will show how I am coming to this result, and would appreciate any math experts to look over my data and see if I am making an error somewhere.

I just filed up my gas tank with 77.380 Litres. This filled the tank right to the top, as I always fill exactly the same way.
My trip meter shows a mileage of 390.1 Kilometres since my last fill.

So, it cost me 77.380 Litres of fuel to travel 390.1 Kilometres.
First thing I do is convert 77.380 Litres into a US gallon.
77.380 divided by 3.785 (number of Litres in a US gallon = 20.44 US gallons
Next I convert 390.1 Kilometres into miles...
390.1 x .621 = 242.25 Miles

So it required 20.44 US gallons to travel a distance of 242.25 miles
242.25 divided by 20.44 = 11.85 MPG

I think I am doing this right, but just want to make sure I'm not over-looking something.

Thanks in advance
Habibi

Thanks screwyou,

In all honesty, I was hoping I was making a mistake.
It's frustrating reading about people with same set up as me getting 17 and 18 MPG.

Oh well, I can live with it.

Thanks again

Talking Accuracy

Habibi,

Actually, 1 gallon is 3.785412 Litres
If you convert the litres to gallons you get less Gallons.
That's good thing for your MPG

1 mile is 1,609.35 metres
1 metre is 0.621368875 mile
So, if you convert metres to miles, you get more miles.
That is a good thing for your mileage.

Recalculate and your MPG will be better.

About time the Americans wake up and Go Metric

F150Europe...I don't think that we will ever go metric.
Just for the fun of it, let me argue. Nothing personal here...just for fun.

WE are the the best country in the world.
WE are the world leaders in most everything important.
WE are a country of inovators.
OUR language is THE international language.
OUR dollar is what every other country wants.
OUR culture is copied by other countrys' young.
OUR boarders are being crossed by people who want to get in.
OUR ideals and lifestyle are envied throughout the world.
WE have the strongest and best fighting forces in the world.

Funny, isn't it that we are all this without exclusive use of the metric system? I say, let the rest of the world either change or get used to OUR differences. There was a big push years ago to change over to metric, but the American people didn't want any part of it. Sure its easy to convert things on a base 10 system, but it is harder to VISUALIZE because the units aren't 'people friendly'.
For instance...There's no 'handy' metric unit for a gallon! Sure its 3.8 liters or whatever, but a gallon is a 'handy' size. It's a size people can relate to, so its got a name of its own, not a multiple or a fraction of something.
The foot is another one. Its a 'handy' size, and the metric system doesn't have any unit like it.
See how many carpenters want to change...
Are they going to want to call a 4x8 sheet of plywood a 1220x2440? A 16' garage door, a 2x4 stud 8' long and double 5" 16' siding become nothing but a series of confusing numbers. Do you see what I meen? "Hey Tony, how many o' dem 15mm. 1220x2440's we got left in da pile?"

So there ya go. I've spouted-off. God bless America. Now I gotta go wax the F150. Hmmm, how do you say 5.4 liters in cubic inches...330?

Hey Habibi,

I don't think you need a math expert, I calculated 11.85 MPG also, I think you need to lighten up on that lead foot you've got. I've got a 4x4 KR S'Crew and got 16.5 MPG while taking a trip down to Florida in May. I average around 13.5 MPG around town though. I've got a program called convert-it and the results of it's conversions were very close to what you came up with.

MROLDV8,

I think in metric terms, a sheet of plywood would probably be referenced by using cm instead of mm. Like, 125x250 cm by 10mm thick. This would very closely match 4'x8'x3/8 plywood. Also, for 1/2" thick they'd use 12mm and for 3/4" they'd use 19mm and for 1" they'd use 25mm.

Another way may be to use meters for plywood, like 1.25x2.50 m x whatever thickness. I know the numbers I've used are not exactly the same as what the conversions are over to feet and inches for standard sheet good here, but European's don't need our system to figure out their own.

I'm American as apple pie and Ford but I don't prefer the Inch*pound*second system over the meter*kg*second system. I design forklifts in the US for a US market even though my company is a fully owned subsidiary of a German based company and we use the metric system almost exclusively and I prefer it now over our US system.

Later,
~DM~

If I 'lighten up" on my lead foot anymore, i'll be going backwards!

Seriously,, the last tank, I didn't use the A/C,, and did everything I could to make a effort to see just how many miles I could squeeze out of a tank. I wanted to see what the potential was under ideal circumstances.

No jackrabbit starts, didn't have my rpm higher than 2,000, no unneccessary idling.

I even put extra wax on it to cut down on the wind resistance, haha

Yup, I'm searching for the Holy Grail (best gas mileage)
and I will figure it out one of these days.

What I find interesting is that it's always 11.8 MPG.
If I drive the snot out of it, it's 11.8, if I drive it like an old bitty. 11.8.

Before anyone jumps in here and say "well, if you wanted good MPG, you shouldntve bought a truck, blah blah blah, let me just say:

I can deal with what I'm getting, and the purpose of my quest isnt because I can't afford the gas, i'm just stubborn, and always trying to improve what I do.
It's not like I shake my fist in the air everytime I fill up, and yell and scream, lol - that's not it.
I know there is something I could be doing better, and one of these days I will figure it out.

Maybe next fill up I will drop my tube steps and bug deflecter.
Yup, I will do what it takes, I will work tirelessly, I will rack my brains until I find a way to improve 11.8, and then when I do, I will sit back with a smug grin and gloat in the fact that I broke 12 MPG.

Yeah baby! I will find a way.

Fine with me to think you are the best in everything.
We know better.
Too bad the russians were first in space.

English is the world language, not American english.

Dream on.

ooh, that stings.. have you been holding that one back since the 60's?

come to think of it, i havent seen a space mission from the netherlands in quite a while.. tell us the last time you guys sent a rocket up? also, list all the times you have put people on the moon.. heck, while you are at it, list how many times the russians have been on the moon, for reference.

OK, you asked for it.
Actually it was June 5th 2002.

We are part of ESA, European Space Agency.
I guess you have never heard of the Ariane rockets.
I guess you have never heard of ****** and Stork.
I don't know for sure but SpaceShuttle is full of their technology.
http://www.esa.int/export/esaLA/index.html

Gagarin was the first man in space, orbiting planet earth.
IMO, if you are the best in space-technology, you are the first in space even if it is 60 years ago.
Besides we all know this moon thing was a hoax.
It had everything to do with prestige.
You know Russia was first, USA had to do something.(Times of cold war)
Why do you think Russia never went there.

Hey, you guys are the best.
Lets go back to the original topic.
Habibi's calculations.

News Flash

I just got back from driving to Toronto.
301 miles round trip.

Oh yeah, I'm so happy, I am gonna dance around my chair.
Are you ready for my record breaking MPG for this trip??

14.8 ..... Tada

This is a new record for me, I don't know what or why, but this is good news.
I drove like a mad man on the way down 70 - 90 MPH all the way,
but on the way home, I set the cruise to 65 MPH, and took it easy.

It's about freakin time I start getting some satisfaction with MPG, yeah, 14.8.
On previous highway trips, it was in the 11's, so things are finally getting better. Could the AF-1 be a contributing factor?
Maybe it's all the extra coats of wax I applied, that could be it too.

Just wanted to share my joyous occassion with y'all!

BTW, mercan beer sucks, and your tobacco smells funny, but you guys do a good job of everything else.

Habibi

Habibi...Sorry for wandering from your origional subject.

DAVEMAN...I too am a designer. I've designed consumer products for over 30 years. Many of those years were spent designing building products and systems, as well as the way to manufacture them. Sometimes I had to work in metric. Yea, its easy to work with, but what I said was that it is harder to 'visualize'. I got this through years of talking to people in the field, from architects to carpenters. I remember designing bath scales...I had to do 3 dials for each model...pounds, kilos and stones. What ever happened to stones? Is that "Like a rock"?
I don't know about you, but its much easier for me to tell a 1/2" bolt head from a 9/16" than it is an 12mm from a 13mm. Maybe that's just the way we teach ourselves to think.

F150Europe...Are those Netherland rockets launched from your missle-carrying submarines as well as from your land-based launch facilities?
(Sorry...couldn't resist)
Just funnin' with ya.

Habibi- I think fuel quality and energy content (not the same as octane) can play a big role in mileage. If your fuel up there is 'oxygenated' or has other low energy components such as MTBE or ethanol, you may get much worse mileage than a similar vehicle that is fed good fuel.

Here in the states, some regions get 'winter' blend low energy fuel for air quality purposes. When the change is made, some see a big drop in mileage, other drivers see no change.

Any chance you filled up at a different location from usual for your recent road trip?
