Having witnessed several tournaments, I suggest that you do the same -- and witness for yourself the damage done to seasoned combatants. Safety clothing (bulky) is essential, as is protection of the neck and ears (in addition to the other obvious places).
DanB is correct once the adrenaline is flowing you hardly realize your hit. Being a tournament player, really the only bulky item's we all wear {clothing} are a pair of cargo pants, long sleeve jersey and sometime a cup!
Some players wear neck protectors but most don't. Most places that run paintball fields have there rental guns shooting around 250 fps.. At that speed you have to be right up on the person and hit him just right to break any skin.
Thad, in one of my earlier post in this thread I posted about this league my team is playing in this year. Well anyway there is a 11 year old that is on one of the teams playing this year. He's a great little player.

Wearing a cup is a good idea to. I've never been hit there, but my friend caught one right in the nuts once. All he was wearing was a pair of nylon windbreaker pants. Needless to say, he sat out for the rest of the day
He had a nice green paint stain on his crotch too
