What model Nikon do you have. I have a Nikon Coolpix 800 and it works pretty good.

I have not had any luck with manual settings and recommend you use auto mode. Check your lens shutter speed. Place the camera on a tripod or steady surface and take a picture, see if this improves the quality. It doesn't take much movement to blur a picture.
