cleaning the inside of an engine

Does anyone know of any really good products to clean the inside of engines?

Here the problem, my beater car a 92' sentra, has a 122k miles on it, I got it when it had 121k. So far I've been fixing it up, and for that many miles the engine is really strong. But this weekend I changed the valve cover gaskets and spark plug gaskets. So I take the valve cover off, and what do see, but a deep burgandy red coat of the oil that seemed liked it was backed into the heads, cams, valve components, and valve cover. Some of it flaked off as I cleaned around where the gaskets went.

So I want to try and get this cleaned. Any products out there that where decently well for this kinda thing?

If you want to see any pics heres a link:

Thanks in advance

Question

I've never seen that inside an engine before. Sure, some burned oil, but that's black and any thing I've seen on the parts was brown and would not flake. If it flakes off, you'll want to be careful. If you get something too strong and that stuff comes off in chunks, it could clog up some oil passages and such. Won't do the cam anygood either.......

Do you know what kind of oil was used by the previous owner? Did they put in some sort of additive?

MitchF150 - I know, I have never seen anything like that in an engine before. It makes me want to pull the engine, totally clean it and rebuild it.

I have no clue what type of oil was in there before. All I know is used gunk engine cleaner on the first oil change and I put in Castrol Syntec part synthetic blend, I wanted to go full synthetic but I thought it would be better to do a part synth blend for about 1000 miles to see if any leaks devolope, which one did.

Since I don't have the tools or are experienced enough yet, rebuilding the engine isn't an option. And paying someone do to would cost more then ordering a much less used engine from Japan.

I have seen that before in an old Toyota I had. Don't try scraping it all off unless you get EVERYTHING. You might break it all lose, and cause more harm than good. Sorry I have no more information for you.
