Good DSL 'deal' or not........?

I am 'dial-up' challenged! It sucketh! Please help me to decide what to do.

ALLTEL DSL: $550 savings, includes a $299 modem, $99 activation fee, and a $150 installation charge when using the self-installation CD. Offer requires minimum 2 year contract--at $49.95/month.

I know DSL is the cat's meow for the net but is this worth a two year locked in trial? Any hidden charges you are aware of?

Thanks,

Dan

$50 a month seems a little too expensive. It's about $36 a month here for roadrunner.

Try Earthlink/ Mindspring I have Mindspring and the setup with them was very easy. Can't remeber how much mine is but it is less than $50 a month. Little to no setup charge too.

Well, It costs 45 a month here in New Orleans for DSL but they give you a free modem and a free Network card. You then only have to pay $99 installation. There isn't an activation fee.

That is way too much money. Does your area have Cable? I've used cable and DSL and the cable in my area is better than DSL. I'd try cable first.

It really depends on how fast the connection is... which tends to depend on how far you are from certain locations along the telephone network. I would use www.dslreports.com and see if you can find the best service speeds in your area, otherwise, typically a Cablemodem would provide faster download speeds than most DSL lines.

DB360: Is that what you pay? Their site says 45 a month. I have zoomtown(dsl) now and was thinking about getting RR since it's faster.

LR: What kind of bandwidth are you getting for 50 a month?

Thanks everybody:

I just called *** cable and got their costs--most of you said the DSL monthly fee was too high--*** is 39.95/mo. here. Still considering what to do but y'all's input has been very helpful.

Thumbs up I have *** too....

I've been very happy with them. I got mine back in September and can't imagine ever going back to dial up. *** is always running specials here in Las Vegas. I paid $100 for the internet card, modem and installation which included running another cable line. They've offered better deals since then. I'm currently paying $35 monthly.

Sprint is our local telephone provider, they kept delaying when it DSL would reach our neigborhood so I went cable.

AND A BIG PLUS, Sprint wanted more + a contract. *** wanted no contract meaning I can change anytime I want to. Just make sure if you go cable that you get a firewall, Zone Alarm has a free one available that works good...

LIGHTNINROD:

49.95 is the going rate for Verizon DSL in my area. Everything else was free (including up to 4 free mail boxes plus space for personal web pages on their server), as long as I did the installation myself [and don't believe the inflated prices on the items they're supplying "free".....but hey, "free" is "free"]. They supplied the modem and about a half dozen in-line suppressors (I think that's what they're called) that you have to run to each phone (installation of these is a simple plug-in....except for the alarm system, which is hooked up via the phone line.......had to have the alarm guys come out for that one......$75 trip charge). I had to supply the network card (good one will cost you $40 or less). Overall, installation was a breeze, and we've been very happy with their service. We don't have the "fastest" available service, but believe me it's plenty fast (as far as I'm concerned, equivalent to the T3 connection at work). You can hook up additonal machines [each one will need a network card, and you'll need a router (preferable.....decent one will run you around $100-$120 if you decide to add this later)].

That being said, it seems that DSL vs. cable connection will vary by area.....in some areas, DSL service is better/faster, in others cable is better/faster. I'd check with a few neighbors who have each before I plunked down the dollars and made the committment [BTW, 2 years seems a bit long........it was one year for our service......but if the service is good and you're planning to stay for 2 years, you won't regret it]

Other than what I've mentioned above, there are no hidden charges for our service.

Good luck
ernie
