State of Emergency in Buffalo - seriously
State of Emergency in Buffalo - seriously
This is beyond belief. We are officially under a state of emergency & the Reserves have been called in to help.
Driving bans are in place all over, airport has shut down for the 4th time since Mon, the thruway is still closed from Rochester to Hamburg (west of Buffalo) & the snow is still coming down heavily.
We have 6' of snow now - not 6' drifts but 6' of actual snow w/no let up in sight. If the winds pick up it will be a true disaster.
What drives me nuts are the people who STILL say they love the snow & are glad we finally got some!
I'm not often scared but I am not ashamed to say that this time, I am - very scared. I can't get out of the house - I don't even want to look & see how bad the truck is buried!
Here's the story I found on MSNBC:http://www.msnbc.com/modules/exports...ews/677761.asp.
We really need help, even in the form of prayers that the snow STOPS & lets us dig out.

Yeah I saw that on the news! One foot of snow is cool to play with, two feet is very fun with a 4x4, three feet is also great when you know how to drive (and willing to shovel). Four is too much for stock trucks, five is crazy even for a Hummer! Six feet
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your neighbors CL. I remember the Blizzard of 78' that hit us with about 3 feet and how it crippled us for days. Can't imagine double that! Hope you have enough food and water and ELECTRICITY. I know others would add booze to the list (hey, I thought of it too) but liquor is not a good idea in a blizzard. Good luck, Dennis
I would be scared too Cowlady if I had 6 ft. of snow around my house. Just make sure you have plenty of food and water. Is your drinking water frozen up? If it is, go easy on any liquids you may have like soda, milk, juices, etc. I'm just worried that you won't be able to get out to get these things and may not be able to for quiet a while. I've never seen 6 ft. of snow before, and I would be shocked if I did see it! Just stay on that computer to keep you occupied until the snow goes away, and you should be fine. Just trying to help you out a little. Bundle up with alot of blankets and DON'T WORRY, you'll be fine. You can talk to me over the computer if you want some comfort.
Thanks SO much guys!
I love you guys - seriously! Yes, this is very scary - it's not letting up at all. Seems the storm is swinging N & S w/Buffalo as the center pivot point. The storm stalls over the city, swings a little in either direction then swings back again & it isn't expected to let up till after New Year's Day. The storm hasn't weakened - I think it's intensified. They have run out of room to push the snow & need high lifts & backhoe's to cart it away. I WANT to volunteer to help out local hospitals (bringing employess/supplies in) but I can't get the truck cleared off - no lie, the snow has to be 8' or more above my head. Of course I can't set a ladder up to get to the top of it either. I'll post pics of pre/post plowing pics from yesterday & then today - you can't even tell it was ever done.
I have electric (for now), heat & food - I may run out of milk but I can drink my coffee black if need be. Wish I had a bread machine - it would come in very handy right now.
Just keep those prayers & warm thoughts coming this way - not just for me but for the whole area. The plow drivers are exhausted, the police, fire & EMS are too & they're getting stuck trying to respond, including the huge fire engines. I NEVER heard of that happening before!
Bear with me if I post about this a lot - it does help to know you guys are here for me! The only way I'm gonna get thru this is because of all of you so I will say thank you in advance & God Bless! Bye for now!

Damn it!
Thats a lot of snow!
Last years 2 feet plus wasn't enough to snow me in, but I gotta believe 6 feet would do it! Sometimes I wish I was snowed in, thats the only way I can get outa work. Me and my 2WD made it through 2 feet just fine, even though the other idiots were trying to kill me.
We finally got a couple of inches here. Hey do ya think the powers that be coulda spread it out a bit more?
One question: are you snowed in all by yourself? As much as I like being alone, I think I would be going batty stuck in my house for a day or two. Good thing you have power.

Yep - I'm all alone here
I am alone & getting pretty restless too, as well as scared. I keep hearing loud cracking noises coming from the attic - we've had many roofs collapse all around here so I worry mine will too
I can't get the truck out because I live in a bad spot. Directly next to me is a long storage building - 200' or more with no driveways or access. When the village idiots plow, they plow ALL the snow from the length of the building & dump it in my driveway. They ADMIT that this happens & get nasty when I call & ask for them to at least open a small part of the driveway for me. It's really hard packed snow so I can't even try to lift it. I have asked & BEGGED them - plow BOTH sides of the street from the main street back - my block ends in a huge empty parking lot with LOTS of room to put snow & they won't because THEY NEVER DID THAT BEFORE! DUH? I have even called the Mayor - he's a part time position (that's how small this "village" is!) & he MADE the head of the "Highway Dep't" come plow me out personally! Anyhow, it's not just what they plow in the street - it's all the snow from the length of that building that I get. The snow is about as high as the top of my tailgate right now - I am NOT trying to barrel thru that & damage the truck.
I sure wish this snow would move well south to ski country - they WANT it. They NEED it. They LIKE it. I don't.
Sorry for the rant - I'm getting cabin fever BIG time & so is the cat. He's giving me looks like he wants to kill me since he hasn't been out since Christmas Eve & he usually stays out all day!

Cowlady,
That is a lot of snow. Haven,t seen that much snow in my whole life.Man, if we got that amount of snow, all greenhouses here in the area would collapse, that is for sure.
Everybody here in Holland knows Buffalo now.
It was on the news at 9 am and 1 pm today, so I have been told.
Lucky I am in the Western part of Europe.
The neighbour countries in the East get plenty of snow as well.
Rain, rain and rain is all we got today, this morning.
A bit of sunshine this afternoon and the storm wasn't as bas as they forecasted.
Windforce 9 instead of 10.
Take care.
Thanks for the pictures in your gallery.

Hi Cowlady:
I almost forgot what real snow was like until I took a look at your pics (was an East-coaster until a decade or so ago). Thank goodness you've got access to the internet, heat, food (black coffee will do you good!), and your friends here on the board. Good luck to you, and hang in there. Doesn't help much, but I guess it could be worse (I hate when folks say that...sorry about that)......you could have a few big dogs who really needed to go out instead of a cat. Don't really know what mine would do, since they've only seen a few fractions of an inch a few times......6 feet.....would get interesting.

Look at the latest pics!
Check my gallery - took more pics this morning. What had been dug out is now buried again. Although it is not snowing at the moment, the snow will move back by tomorrow. Officially it's now 82.3" since Monday.
Thanks for all your support - it really IS helping me! I will continue to update you as things change - let's hope I can soon say the storm is GONE!

Hey Cowlady,
Good luck with your situation. I can't really relate to being snowed in but I can relate to feeling helpless though.
I've been through several bad Hurricanes and beleive me, it sucks. I rode out Hurricane Hugo in '89 and we had no running water, electricity or phones for over two weeks. The hurricane lasted for 11 hours and it was pure hell for all 11 of them. The house I was living in at the time was my Grandmother's old house that my mother was born and raised in it. Anyway, the hurrincane blew all the shingles off of both sides of the roof and two huge pine trees poked holes into the roof at several places. There wasn't a dry spot in the house and we actually were using umbrellas inside to stay dry.
My Father's mom was living then but on oxygen and she was miserable to say the least. Charleston was devastated by Hugo and it has a lifetime of memories that never seem to go away.
After the storm was over, we went outside and we thought that we'd been nuked. It looked just like a seen from a nuclear attack. Every tree in site was gone and all piled up like trash. There was destruction everywhere you looked and after a while folks just became numb about it. Today, there are only a few signs that it took place but the memories are still fresh.
That same year, SanFranciso had that huge earth quake that rocked that city out of it wits and lives were lost in groves. That was a true tragedy and I was very sad to just see it much less live there.
In addition to the Hurricane in Charleston, we had one of our worst winters on record. We had almost a foot of snow and a hard freeze for a week and almost everything was shutdown due to frozen water pipes, sewer pipes, power lines down.
1989 was a bad year for a lot of folks but somehow we prevailed. We've been real lucky for almost 10 years and that goes for hurricanes and bad winters, hope it lasts for another 10.
Keep warm as I'm sure you do but most of all, think of good times and that no matter what, you've got lots of friends that are thinking of you and your well being.

HEY COWLADY? JUST THOUGHT I'D CHECK ON YOU TO SEE HOW YOU'RE DOING. I HOPE YOUR GOOD AND WARM. I HEARD THAT YOUR ATTIC(IS CREEKING)? STAY IN A CORNER OF THE ROOM, SO IF IT DOES FALL IN, IT MOST LIKELY WILL FALL RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOM. CORNERS SEEM TO BE SUPPORTED MORE THAN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOM. I DON'T MEAN TO SCARE YOU, I'M JUST TRYING TO HELP YOU JUST IN CASE IT DOES FALL IN. STAY SAFE AND WARM, AND KEEP ON TALKING TO US.
