Window's XP users - BEWARE!
Window's XP users - BEWARE!
You may have aready heard about this but it was on the news just last nite. There's a major security flaw that allows access to confidential files & causes other severe problems.
You need to download the patch right away! I guess you can get it as the MS site.
I mention this since I know many of you have upgraded to XP - it sounded pretty serious so I wanted to be sure to pass this along. Good luck!

True
Yep, I heard that one of the problems with XP is that the build-in firewall only blocks incomming traffic. It does not see outgoing traffic so if a trojan horse virus is able to get onto your pc, the virus could send all your data from your hard drive without you ever knowing it. Therfore it is essential that you get a third party firewall (zonealarm is free, of Norton seems to be real good). Anyway I have not heard of anything else wrong with XP but the system crashes have not slowed down on my pc with the migration from ME to XP. So what the heck, as long as I use Windows I just have to keep hitting the save button at least once a minute
Uh guys XP is great!
Download a FREE patch from the MS site...
And as far as crashing! Do a clean install! Any upgrades from a non-NT kernel or any windows for that matter is BS! I have many friends running XP and still 0 ZERO problems with the OS. If you did a clean install, I'm
What system do you have? XP is mostly made for current systems.
I still think Bill Gates is great
Oh and thanks CL for the news flash!

I have a current system (pentium III - 450 with 500+ ram)
It's just that I leave my computer on all the time, it looks like XP is just not good for doing that. I talked to a couple of system admins and they told me that all Windows products should be turned off if you use your computer frequently. Well I also have a lot of programs running when I use it so that might have something to do with it (playing Rogue Spear at least once a day).
Don't get me wrong I'm happy with XP, it's just that I did not think that it would crash as often as it does.

Every since I downloaded XP I get that message as well. But I have Norton's Firewall which prompts me to this message. Maybe someone can tell me what it exactly means. Here's the message I get:
Attempt to connect to local computer using the Backdoor/SubSeven Trojan horse blocked.
Is this what you guys/gals are getting? My computer gets this alert about once a week.

Are you serious Jupiterak?Subseven is a "back orifice" type thing. If you have that installed a cracker can enter your system, open CD drawers, log passwords etc... as you type. Pretty powerfull thing...
Just make sure your anti-virus is up to date and never accept strange email attachements..
eph1fifty- Thanks for the info. That's the message I usually get but I always have it blocked. I installed Norton's 2002 the same time as XP, and my virus programs is always up to date. So hopefully I shouldn't have any problems.

Anti-VIRUS software doesn't do a good job (if any job at all) of detecting worms and trojan horses. You need to get a "worm" scanner and make sure that you aren't infected. The firewall should block access to/from your system, but you want to get rid of any "critters" that might be installed on your box.
Hey Jupiterak,
I use XP and had problems at first but I finally figured it out myself with insufficient help from Microsoft I might add. Anyway, I've got a cable modem and I get several hits on my Norton 2002 firewall each day and yes it's the back door subseven you mentioned. I've also got Norton anti-virus and so far I've had no real detectable problems.
I was experiencing lots of system crashes after upgrading to XP from Windows 2000 professional and also upgraded to Office XP from Office 2000 professional.
What I found out was causing my XP problems was I had to reload Microsoft Office which has some files that were corrupted for some unknown reason. If you are not using Microsoft Office for XP then you may be experiencing something different than what I've experienced. I could write reams about my experience with XP but I'm pretty good with computers and it had me going there for a while!
Let me know and I can tell you way more than you care to know about my experience but now it's working with absolutely no crashes and no detectable issues. XP is great now but I was skeptical for some time in the beginning.

Who ever said that anti Virus proggys don't adequetly protect against trojans is right.
Get Trojan Killer and Jammer from Tauscan , it should be all you need as AV's have to be updated all the time, but Jammer prevents changes to the registry which must occur for a virus to take effect.
I run a TK, Jammer, and Firewall, at all times, and only occasionaly scan for virii. I always check out clean.
Of course it helps if you use a email proggy that can't download virri, like I do.
btw, who is that Kirk Dawes guy that keeps sending me virri? Anyone else get any from him? I know he has a Ford Truck because of the addy he keeps sending them to.

If you don't have a firewall, http://www.zonealarm.com . 'Nuff said. That piece of firewall that comes with XP is worthless at best.
Protect yourself. Hackers are out there, and they're good.
