Thanks for the tips and info everyone. I just downloaded the MS Security Patch, so hopefully that'll cure the problem for a while.

ZONEALARM!!!!! Don't use broadband without it!!

I have fresh (48hrs) installs of both Windows2K Pro and XP Pro (I use system commander). I can't tell any difference in speed at all. I have a 1200Mhz Athlon system. I know XP benchmarks slightly slower, but in real use, it's no slower at all. I think XP is cheesy as hell looking though. I'm still checking it out, there are some cool features 2K doesn't have.

Use Zonealarm (since it's free), otherwise use any purchased firewall, but use a firewall. If you have cable connection or any other connection that is continuous, you will get hacked into if you do not have a firewall. I use Norton and get attemps at least three times a day, without Norton I would never know it was happpening!

Dutchy's right, don't surf without a firewall. On TechTV they had a guy masked and he basically walked through the steps of a hacking. It's pretty amazing what they can do with a few simple utilities and a command line. This guy located a target computer they had set up on the LAN, got in, installed Backorifice, and remotely forced the machine to reboot. He then had complete control over the system and could also capture passwords, etc as they were typed on the victim machine.

Question

Hey I have a question

I am curently running melenium ans I hate it. I wish this computer had windows 98, but oh well. I have been having problems such as locking up, illegal opperations, and the computer locking up. I never had as many problems with windows 95 or 98.

Would you all recomend me upgrading to windows XP?

Any info, or recomendations would be greatly helpful.

Thanks
Don

I would do anything to get off of running Windows ME for sure. I dont know what the heck they were thinking when they made that particular version of Windows but its by far the worst performing one Ive seen. 2000 or XP is the way I would go.

And I would only recommend "upgrading" where upgrade is defined as formatting your hard drive and installing a fresh copy of XP.

HEHE
I am back, yes I did a reformat and a install. I didn't spill any Coke.

I had just recently backed everything up onto CD's the other day when Meleniun crashed on me.

I still have to load a few cd's and have to figure out why the sound isn't working, but I did a compatability scan and it showed there might be a conflict with the Sant Cruz sound card.

I am going to try to figure out the sound card I am sure I will figure it all out.

Thanks everyone

edit
I got the sound working again, All I had to do was uninstall and reinstall my sound card CD. Man it make weird noises, LOL

Now all I have to do is play with it, and get used to all the new fetures.

Just get a Soundbalster Live card of whatever flavor you want. I got an OEM value edition for less than thirty five bucks.. Dealing with old hardware/crappy drivers isn't worth anyones time. Just go get a new one
