Rode with the cops
Went out friday night and spent 2nd shift with the police
I got to ride around with them and see all the kinda stuff they do. It was kind of a slow night though. Nothing exciting happened. A couple car wrecks, a DV call, and a man with a gun call, etc. But he did flip on the lights and sirens and drove on the wrong side of the road and ripped *** through town. What a rush. It was pretty cool.
Since all the recent bank robberies here in cincinnati the guy said that he'd been carrying a sub machine gun for a while (and still is).
I got a tour of the police station and the evidence room smells like marijuana. Whoda thunk it?

Wow!
That sounds really exciting! I wish they'd do that here in Buffalo but we're lucky we even have cops - HUGE budget "oops" & we're facing police & fire department layoff's!
If I ever do get the chance to do a ride along though I'd love to go. I'm sure even a slow night has something to experience!

sounds like a cool ride. what was it for? are you in school to be a cop or something? they don't just put ads in the paper for anyone to go for a fun ride with them do they? although maybe they should, charge a nominal admission and you pay for the gas and away we go
Wild,
My town actually does put adds in the paper.....you take a 3 or 4 week class of sorts to see what the police do..then you ride a shift.......The class fills fast, you have to be on your toes to get into one........I think its a pretty good program.....

Lots of Fun
My part time boss is a full time County Deputy and he asked me if I wanted to ride one night. He works 10:00pm to 6:00am. I said ok, what the hell. The first night was AWESOME. As soon as we clocked on, we responded to a Domestic Violence dispute. We ended up arresting the boyfriend and then, later, when we went back to question the witnesses, we found out they both had outstanding warrants and had to haul them in too. One of them was a drunk homosexual and kept making suggestive comments the whole time we were transporting. Not five minutes after we get that case all squared away, we got a distress call from another deputy in foot pursuit. We ended up busting up a rolling meth lab on that one. We spent many hours going through all the evidence. This kid was trying to steal Anhydrous Ammonia from a local Co-op which is where he got caught. I had the most fun that night. Doing about 105 mph on country roads with lights and sirens at 3:00 a.m. VERY COOL. If anyone has the chance to do this sometime, DO IT!!! It is worth it. I am looking forward to going again soon. Oh yeah, I forgot about the 100 mph pursuit of a speeding motorcycle. We caught him, he didn't like us!!!
Blue Ox,
It sounds like you had a great time, but you should keep your experience to yourself (or only share it with your spouse) the reason I say this is that "we" police officers are not supposed to talk about what we see, or what we do for privacy reasons. (I know it sux, but you never know who is reading this) Please don't get offended by this but I just wanted to warn you about giving to much details in your post.

i just did this for fun. this is the second time i've rode. Before i rode with a different department though.
I am a criminal justice major so i guess it makes sense to go on one ya know? I think that when i take a my field placement course i have to do one anyways so i'll try to ride with a department in one of the not so nice parts of town and see a little something maybe

They have a job share thing back home. My old room mate was a police officer in Richardson TX. I could go for a ride share with him only if he was allowed to see what I did for a day, Department policy I kid you not. So he hung with me for 8 hours at my restaraunt and I got to ride a shift with him. Highlight of that experience, the bear claws from Sun Rise Doughnuts. Eceptional at 4 AM
Yep, used to ride with one everyday back in highschool. Bestfriends farther was the county sheriff. He always packed his pistol plus usually an AK-47 or a MAC-10 or a urban assult type shotgun. I have seen a few things go on but not much. The only time I ever saw the man fire a gun was once he shot at a coyote with the AK-47, in which he winded up missing, nice gun just 100% accurate.
danb360 ah i guess it makes sense for you to go along on a ride with them. kind of a "get to know what you're in for" thing.
s'crewloose that sounds awesome. i'd love to do that. although in the sleepy little town that i live in there probably wouldn't be much going on. i used to deliver newspapers here when i went to college. yes a 30 yr old paper boy, it paid the bills though. anyways i'd start at 1:00 am and finish at 3:30 am on weekdays and on sat 1:00 am to 7:00 am. after a couple of years the most exciting thing i saw happen was when the police pulled me over to check what was in my truck. it was squatting a little, they said someone had ripped off some large spools of cable earlier that day.

Dutchy-
I hope I didn't step on any toes. I didn't think what I posted was any worse than what you can see on the show "COPS" any day of the week here in the states. I witnessed a lot of things that night that were worse than what I chose to post. Seriously, I have seen worse on T.V. Heck, people in Los Angeles see high speed pursuits practically every day!

No problem Ox
Ox,
No you did not step on any toes, at least not mine. I was just trying to let you know that when most people go on ride alongs they either get a class or at least sign something that states that they will not reveal any information of what they witness. You did not write anything that was like you said stuff you see on COPS everyday, but you never know who is reading these posts, it might be just the person you happened to mention. Anyway enough on this I'm glad that you have interest in the law enforcement work, I like it when people get to see some of the stuff we have to deal with. I hope you get to go along again if you get a chance.
