Almost grabbed a 2003 Mustang Mach 1!
Almost grabbed a 2003 Mustang Mach 1!
Locally there is a 2003 Mustang Mach 1 for sale at a dealership. It is Azure blue, 5spd, 51k miles, claimed they bought it from a Florida dealership. Lightly modified ( MRT intake, MRT short shifter, oversized flat black paint work on hood, stage 3 clutch, Magnaflow exhaust, lowered, painted calipers, tint... ), and the dash is signed by Scott Hoag. They originally had it listed for $16,600. I looked it up on NADA and got $11,475. So I figured they wanted a huge profit on it for what it is. I went to look at it and drove it. I like it a lot, much more than my Cavalier. The only problem I had was the stage 3 clutch. I'm not weak but damn that was a knee buster
. Anyone that has ever driven one of these cars all stock, is the clutch nice and easy? I don't expect it to be as light as my Cavalier but I don't expect it to feel like its 30lbs.
So anyways, I gave them the NADA print out I had, and he said "But this doesn't list the loaded options." I got frustrated and told him "What options could you get for the Mach 1? You could pick your color, your transmission, and whether you wanted the brush aluminum dash appearance package. These all came loaded with specific Mach 1 seats, wheels, Shaker scoop, 3.55 rear end, and the 32v 4.6L. Sir I know these cars very well, everything else on that is aftermarket which if anything will hurt the value of it being non original. The fact that Scott signed it does not make it worth anymore to me." He then went back and talked to someone for about 15 minutes, came back with $15,500 as the lowest they can go due to them "buying the car" and having it serviced and all. I said no thanks due to the clutch and being $3,800 over book value. I would be perfectly fine paying $12,000. The next day the listing was still on my PC browser, I refreshed it and they updated it lowering the cost to $15,884 from $16,600.
The catch is, I still want it... What are the chances after a month or two they will call me up and accept book price of near by it if it does not sell? I can dream right?
. Any opinions on why they would want so much? Its 11 years old and not very very rare yet. Any suggestions on getting them closer to book price? I can't wave $12,000 cash in their face so that's out of the question. Would need to be a finance unfortunately.
Here is the picture I took of it.

And here is the ad listing.

I got the hots for a 2004 Mach I a few years ago. My son and I were looking for a car for him. I bought a 2006 Miata for him which was what he really wanted. It was dark gray and had full length headers with a wonderful sounding Borla exhaust. That thing stirred up passions inside me I thought were long gone. But I fought off the desire to purchase it. I did do a lot of looking for Mach Is at that time and there seemed to many of them around if you didn't mind doing some traveling to go get one.
The clutches are still relatively heavy stock, but not sure if they're any heavier than a normal GT, can't remember. I've driven at least 4 or 5 though. Also, my dealership has sold a few all-original, low mileage (less than 30k in some cases) ones and IIRC, they all went for $15k or above. So they aren't crazy. I'm not sure how accurate NADA is with "special" cars, even though the info IS for a Mach 1. I'd bet they paid around $12k for it, otherwise they'd have the price lower. No dealership wants to have equity tied up in a vehicle for more than a month, max.
I just talked to my buddy I work with about the Mach 1's we've had. About a year ago, he wanted to buy one that had 74k miles, was exceptionally clean, the same blue color as the one you're looking at, and we had it listed for $14.8k or somewhere around there, with an actual rock bottom price of $13.5k. And that was the best "deal" out of all of them. The others we've had in the last two years were between 18 and 40k miles and from $16-18k dollars. All very clean, original, etc.

But, if they offered me the car for $12k like I said, I would bite my nails and probably scoop it up. The 7% interest rate on an '03 would almost be worth it for how fun that car seems. But not so much when I imagine how much the insurance premium would increase with a 3rd vehicle.

I forgot to mention that the 04 model Mach I I looked at did not have a heavy clutch. I don't remember even thinking about it other than being normal. The transmissions in those do have a little issue in second gear synchronizing. The one I drove when I shifted to second, if I didn't shift it just right the gears would clash a little. My other son had a 2004 GT Mustang and he said that was fairly normal for those transmissions.
The last few years, the GTs have over 400hp, much faster than the old Mach Is. Maybe you could get one of those without spending too much more money?

Nice to know I have Kmac on my side
. I do like the Cavy, especially since recently I paid it off. I was all ready to trade it in but not on the high Mach 1 price. They would give me NADA book price trade of $3,000 for it though. I considered keeping this Cav and paying the truck off and going for a Mach 1 if I can pay off 50% of it. As long as I'm not paying $200+ a month I would do it. I just don't have $8,000 to hand over to the credit union to finance the other half. Don't worry Patrick, a 4v could very well be possible in my possible future.
Really? By the 'ast few years do you mean the 4.6 3v? Or the 2011 5.0L? I don't care highly for the bulky bodies on the 2005+ but I would still consider one if the mpg would be relatively equal to a Mach 1. They have to weigh a little more, but the interior is a bit nicer. Especially with the Shaker 500 systems. And a 2007+ can get the 1.49% interest rate. Next year it would be 2008+. I just don't want to pay $20,000+ for one, I was hoping $12k would scoop up a fun little Mach 1 for a DD.

The 5.0 doesnt put 400 to the ground even with a tune. And I think the 3v 4.6 is like 370 crank HP which is s more like 320 to the wheels.
4.6 4v is regarded as one of the best engines because it makes more HP than its displacement without any F.I.
281ci and putting out 305hp /320 trq

The Bullit is an interesting car. High compression 4.6 4v, better brakes and I think there was some light suspension tweaking. Tokico shocks I think. I'm an idiot, I thought about the Bullitt and for some reason thought that's what we were talking about. Never mind!
Here's the Mach1 info
