SSD In Home Theater PC?
Anyone running a SSD? How do you like it?
I am finally giving up on getting my wifi to work on my home theater PC and hardwiring it.
So I want to speed it up a bit, mainly boot speed. Are they worth the price? They have come down dramatically in price, so I think it might be worth it.

Long term reliability is still questionable, but the technology has matured a lot. We have found that the most reliable SSD's are Intel, followed by the Samsung 840 Pro series.
It will speed up your bootup speed, and also speed up opening programs that are installed on it. You don't want to use them for data, they fill up too fast. There will be absolutely no improvement in streaming media.
For improving streaming, you should be Gigabit across your whole network - both adapters and router/switch ports.

My plan has been to just install OS and software on it, then use my current 1TB HDD for storage.

Good choice. This is just as good and cheaper:
If you want 180gb at essentially the same price as the Samsung 128:
Amazon.com: INTEL 120 GB 2.5" Internal Solid State Drive 2.5IN MLC 7MM RESELLER BOX / SSDSC2BW120A4K5 /: Computers & Accessories

I'm running 3 systems that all have the 840 Pro SSDs with 256 gigs pop each. No complaints.
If you are looking for reliable storage go with WD Black, Seagate Constellation ES3, or a HGST Ultrastar. I've got 2 systems setup running 6 4TB drives in a RAID 5 using AMD controllers. One system running Blacks and one running the ES3s.

I have a Corsair Neutron 256GB SSD and a 2TB Western Digital Black. The only thing on my SSD are Windows 7 and my Flight Simulator. Boot speed is impressive. I spend 3 seconds in POST, then black screen, then the little "Loading Windows" thing where the tiles go together and bam, at my desktop. I clocked it at 12 seconds from power button to idle desktop. When you open something, it just POPS as soon as you let off the click, its impressive. I'll never go back to HDD for operating systems.
