Looking at pre-owned Ford Edge
Looking at pre-owned Ford Edge
My girlfriend is looking to replace her 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 ext cab 5.9L 4wd with 120k, and a glorious 11mpg on a good day, for this pre-owned 2011 Ford Edge 3.5 Limited AWD with 85k. Decently high miles on it for its age, its first year was as a rental ( kind of a red flag to me ) and the second owner put heavy highway miles on it. It had 1 accident in early 2012, involving a drivers side hit. Apparently it has checked out well without frame damage. We are going to look at it tomorrow and get her driving it to see if its for her and I will give it my look over, see if the jamb lines are all level and doors/hood shut well, and possibly have it checked out by my mechanic bud. If not, she may stick to looking for an '08+ Escape 4cyl for lower cost and 2/3mpg more avg.
Aside of what I mentioned and thoroughly checking it out, are there any hot things to watch out for on these Edge vehicles? Specifically mechanical? I know little about them but my google search has rendered some Sync issues and My Ford Touch issues ( electronic crap pretty much ) and I even seen one report of one parked in a slanted driveway and ended up coasting out into the street out of park, assuming thats an issue with the plastic shifter? Hopefully just operators error. Just hoping to hear that they are a solid reliable vehicle. Since it has such miles on it and is relatively new, it seems worth looking into granted the standard suspension components are in order and the interior isn't really worn much. She's interested in '07/'10 Edge vehicles also, but she would prefer the '11+ enhancements and this one is local and one of the most well priced ones I have found online. Others with 90k miles are priced near $19k. She averages 10k - 15k miles per year so it seems like it would last awhile. We do most commutes together with my car.

Lower miles will cost $20k+, so that will make it not an option. She is preferring to stay around $15k which is why I had her looking at Escapes but she looked at a few Edge vehicles and liked them. This just happens to be the first 2011 body within her spending willingness.
Highway miles are easier on the vehicle, and that's what they've gotta be on a 3 year old car. Both my truck and my parents 2011 Yukon were rental vehicles. While I'm not thrilled about it, my truck seems perfectly fine and the Yukon has gone from ~22k to 56k in less than 2 years with no issues other than electronic crap.
However, I don't know that trading high miles, an accident, rental car status, and whatever else in exchange for a some leather and newer looks is worthwhile. But then again, the mileage is addressed, accident doesn't matter at all if there's no frame damage and it was repaired properly, and being a rental car doesn't mean it isn't a good vehicle.
For what little this is worth, I'm always looking at what we have to repair on different vehicles when they come in (I have access to it anytime I pull cars up in the system, which I do close to 1000 times per week while I'm working) and Edges have never stood out as needing a lot of things, like Chrysler products and some German POS's . . .

The miles do turn me off from it but its considerable. She doesn't totally seem to care about re-sale. It would be the newest vehicle she has ever had so that is pretty much why. But the good mpg, AWD, and capability of the vehicle stand out well. I had her looking at '07/'10 SEL/Limiteds but she fell in love with a 2012 Limited at a dealer the one day
.
This one in specific also does not appear as a 'high end' Limited as I learned they often have the Vista panoramic roof, power rear gate, and push button start. Rarely they get the optional 20"s in the 2011 year at least. These little things do not matter to either her or I. The factory Nav, reverse cam, dual climate, HIDs, are pretty good selling points. Its just a matter of deciphering if it will be worth having in the long run 5yrs from now, whether it will hold value of $9,000 or more. I failed to mention the clean NadaGuides book price of it is $23,350. The rental part, and the collision part costing it $7,000 is a bit suspicious to be but the specific dealer does like to keep inventory moving. I'm 50/50 on it, if it had the vista roof, power gate, and 20"s I would probably tell her go for it, after a very thorough check over of coarse. Guess we won't know until we look at it. Told her if it isn't 'the one' not to worry as there are thousands of Limited pkg Edge vehicles out there and there will always be more.

The auto fax did not state any salvage title or flood, frame damage, nothing of that nature.
Went and look at it today, they want to rip her on a trade for her truck so that is complicating things for now, she sent in for a pre-approval with her credit union but unless they give her enough for the truck the deal will probably be off and the search will be put off until after income tax time.
The Edge spent 90% of its life in NY.

At least $4,000. The guy valued it at $2,500... its got dash cracks, some fender rust, and a squeaky door, K&N FIPK, Flowmaster Super 10 exhaust, but it is still worth at least $4k in my opinion. Book value is $4,900. Going to end up private selling in spring if she can't get a good trade.

Iduno, the price tag seems a little high IMO. For those miles anyway.
