Need a family car

hey yall. Well Ive got a single cab f150 right now and its our only vehicle, and weve got another baby on the way so that brings my family to 4. I dont want to trade my truck in and I dont want to buy a foreign car. Ive been looking around and I have found some escapes that are 4x4 and what not. Anyone know much about escapes? I read that they have horrible transmissions and that they will break down out of nowhere. All ideas and information is greatly appreciated.

No input on the Escapes, but I got a Crew Cab F150 as a "family car" and it's great

Are you looking to buy new or used? I believe the new Escapes have a different trans than the old body style. From what I recall there were some issues with the trans in the Escape but like most car problems today it was probably overblown via the internet.

Right now the midsize sedan market is extremely competitive and there are some great cars for the money out there. If I was in the market for a 4 passenger car the Ford Fusion and VW Passat (it's made in TN if that helps) would be at the top of my list.

I'd rather have a'97-'03 supercab than an excape...

I know a lot of people like the fusions

Thanks for the input. I would for sure take a crew cab 150, but they are still too much money....im trying to stay around 5k....I reckon if I traded in my truck I could get a newer 4door. Just really like the idea of keeping my truck.

Do you prefer a car or small SUV? Some Escapes drive poorly (can be scary on the highway at 80 mph). So get them up to speed of you test drive any. I'm assuming you can tolerate a GM vehicle cause it's still American? There are tons of early 2000s GM cars that would fit the bill for you. Inexpensive and decent gas mileage. They aren't a Mercedes, but they can get the job done. Fusion could be a good option too, and made a little better than the GM cars

My beater 2002 Impala has 152,000 miles on it and it's still going strong. I can stomach it because it's pre sellout, I mean pre taxpayer bailout.

This past January I picked up a 2011 Crown Victoria LX with 36 K miles. I'm at 41k miles now & couldn't be happier! Great family car!

This is what I want to do eventually. Possibly a commuter vehicle as I hate my 02 impala.

My sister has had a couple of Escapes without issues. She had an 03 and an 06. I've driven them many times and they seemed like great little SUV's. I drove her 03 many times when she lived in Texas, and I drove her 06 from California to Texas and back to Caliornia for her. Both vehicles got great gas mileage. The V6 has plenty of power to get that thing moving, and it handled well at high speeds.

I personally wouldn't buy myself one though. I'm 6'3" and it was a little cramped for my taste.

x2 on the Crown Vics... Cheap, ugly, stupid reliable, parts are cheap, mileage is decent. Mine has 254K miles on it and I would drive it to California tomorrow. Daily driving I see 23-24 mpg, lightly loaded on road trips 25-26 mpg (75-80 MPH), fully loaded (2 coolers, 4 people, luggage) cruise control set on kill(80-85), 23 MPG flat.

Just do a quick google search and find out when they changed trannies! But a crown Vic would certainly be worth looking into
