The Family Truckster from National Lampoons Vacation movie is going up for sale in Houston. It will be one of the vehicles sold in a Mecum Auction, April 4-6.
It was based on a Ford LTD Country Squire.

Whether or not is was one of the 5 is yet to be determined. Either way, its pretty cool!

 

My money says "Metallic Pea" as an automotive color is poised for a comeback!

 

The movie was absolutely hilarious but the car was/is absolutely hideous.

Those Country Squires were hideous enough without doing that to it.

I've driven Country Squires from that era. Complete dogs.

 

Just about everything from that era were complete dogs. The early smog control was a real killer.

 

Yeah - the 351w was the biggest engine offered in the 79 wagons, with about 150 hp.

 

Just an FYI. At this time the Family Truckster did not sell. Not sure what the bid was, but evidently it did not meet the reserve.

 

I had a '77 Country Squire that I bought for a work car and to pull my boat...got it in 1980 and it had a 400 cu inch with a 2 bbl carb...lucky to get 200 miles on a tank. Sold it when I bought my '84 F-150...the Squire was like driving an aircraft carrier!

 

1979 was the first year of the downsized and lightened LTD. I was a Ford salesman for a while in the fall of 1973 and my demo was a Country Squire with a 429. Now THAT was a gas hog.
