For all you shotgun owners

Yesterday I purchased a new Remington 870 Express 12 gauge with the 28 inch barrel. Unfortunately I can't pick it up til Thursday because the state is backed up on doing background checks for new purchases. I'll be doing mostly skeet shooting and a bit of hunting if I can ever get enough time. Just wondered if anyone else on here has one and what their opinions on it are.

I got one. Love it. Best action in the game IMO.

I feel your pain on the background check delays. I was buying an S&W MP yesterday and after a 15 minute wait I was delayed. I've never had that happen before but the guy at the store says it has been happening a lot more lately.

The older 870s were pretty solid and would tolerate a ton of abuse. Then somewhere along the way Remington cheaped out and it showed. The extractors would break and leave shells in the chamber and the feeding mechanism would break and dump all of the shells in the magazine out when you went to eject the first shell and load the second. A guy I work with has one of these and it has dumped a lot of shells into the water while he was duck hunting. I've heard they have corrected the issue but I don't know of anyone with the newer model.

X2. The old ones were top notch, solid mechanism and always reliable then in the late eighties and early nineties they started cutting quality with the internal and externals. Still a good gun for the most part but nothing compared to the gun that made it's name in the field and with most law enforcement agencies.

cant go wrong with an 870 got mine as a 17th Bday present 7 years later and 1,000's and 1,000's of rounds later the only part i have put on is a mag tube extender. it is with me at every 3 gun i go to and is always ALWAYS the most reliable gun i have with me it never has failed. boom pump repeat everytime.

even got the fastest pump action at a 3 gun 50/50 raffle pump Vs semi see who is faster. 6 shots 6 targets hit in 3.01 seconds. the semi guy beat me thoe he did it in 2.52 seconds and i said well mine aint bad for a 250 dollar gun that 7 years old....he said well i dont even wanna tell you what i payed for mine haha.

i have the 20" smooth barrel and a 28" bird barrel.

870? do you mean the best 300 dollar gun ever? ive had several. 20g shot many deer, crow, rabbit, squirrel, pegions, and clay targets. The 12 is new to me, but no issues so far!

I've beat the crap out of several 870's and they kept working. The only reason I didn't buy one is I hate where the safety is. It's set up for a right handed shooter, which I am not.

I'm right handed so the safety shouldn't be an issue. And this will be my first shotgun as well!

I bought a 870 Express about 10 years ago, black synthetic w/ 26" barrel. I changed the stock for a collapsible stock w/ pistol grip and side saddle a few years ago. It mostly keeps the 26" and is used for skeet and geese, but I also picked up a smooth bore slug barrel for $40 and have taken it deer hunting, too.

The only problems I've had were from Black Cloud shotgun shells. Federal apparently has a tendency to over-pack them, and cause them to bulge. The shells are forced into the chamber, and then jam and are difficult to extract. I sent almost a full box back to Federal because I they wouldn't fit into the chamber without being forced in. Other than short-shucking it a few times, no other problems. Even in nasty, cold weather while goose hunting, it goes boom, pump, boom, pump, boom ... as long as I don't short-shuck it.
