Cool My 6.2 Gas Mileage (and story)

I did a quick search to find the best place to put this thread. But it seems that "gas mileage" is all over the board. So I guess here seems OK.
Over the years I've always heard about how 4-wheel drive pick-up trucks inhearintly get bad gas mileage. Especially if it had a big motor and you got on it alot. It wasn't until I was able to afford one that I really wanted to know what the story was. So here's mine. When I was looking to buy myself a truck, all I knew for sure is that it had to be a 4x4, big enough for more than two people, carry an occasional load or two, and be able to tow a bit of weight. And Oh Yea, it had to be a V8 and one of the Big Three! When I set out I pretty much already knew I wanted an F150. But to be fair I wanted to see and drive what was available to me. The chevy and dodges I tested were very nice trucks. But they were just "lacking something". They drove fairly nice, had OK comfort amd room, but power (to me) didn't seem to be that great. Even the F150 supercrew 4x4 with the 5.4 wasn't that impressive. But the F150 was still miles above the chevy and dodge in ride quality, comfort and room. In total I drove about two Silverados, two GMC's, and probably three dodges, two with "Hemi's".
After about two months of searching dealerships I still couldn't find what I wanted. It was late in '10 and most everything was picked over. So back to the "Net" I went for some more research. And then I was thinking right now I can afford to buy whatever I wanted. So why not just order the truck I want? This was the summer of 2010, so I was researching the new 2011 F150's. And that's when I discovered the "6.2"! YEAH Baby! That was the ticket. And the gas mileage numbers weren't that bad. So in early october of 2010 I ordered a 2011 F150 Lariat supercrew 4x4 with the 6.2 engine. I took delivery on Jan. 21rst., 2011. Now I'll get into the gas mileage.
I decided right away that I was gonna baby this truck. This will be the only time I'll ever be able to buy one, so it has got to last. The first eight months I kept maticulas (spell check) records of the gas mileage. I kept receipts and jotted down the numbers from the information center in dash. Then I came home and entered them on a chart for my records. The entries where from left to right by column as follows
Date/cost per Gal./grade/miles on truck/miles traveled/gall./ave. mpg/fill cost.
Then at each fill up I would make the next entry on the line below it. At this point I had about 10,640 miles on the truck with a pretty good representation of what the gas mileage was. Also about mid April the hardshell cover and skid plates I ordered with the truck were finally in and ready to install. So I was able to compare the numbers prior and after thier install.
Now it's two years later. The truck has about 33,000 miles on her, and some added modifications I've made to improve her looks and performance. Aside from the metioned bed cover and skid plates, the mods are a Go Rhino front brushguard with a set of PIAA RS600 HID lights. Cooper Discoverer AT3 tires in the stock 275/65-18 size. A volant air intake tube with the factory airbox's bottom cut off for better airflow. I removed the rest of the Volant system, it was terrible, long story. And the biggest mod is the StainlessWorks performance exhaust system with longtube headers, highflow cats, X-pipe, chambered mufflers and 3" dual exhaust. Starting on my next fill up I will begin tracking my gas mileage once again. After two years, with about 33,000 miles and the modifications, it will be interesting to see where the gas mileage as settled at. What started all this is I was looking at the EPA fuel economy estimates that was on my window sticker. Granted there are a ton of variables. But I wanted to compare my actual mileage. Below I'm going to ad what the EPA estimates where for my truck back in 2010. Then I will add my Low, High and Average numbers prior to the bed cover and skid plates install. And then the same for afterwards. The miles traveled for both those time periods are nearlly identical. 5,370 miles prior, 5,270 after. Also, you will see that my ave. mpg increased by 1.8 mpg after they were installed. Elsewhere on this website I've made various claims about how well I'm doing with my gas mileage, and have posted some screen shots of the information center in my photo albums to back them up. But I wanted to put something down on paper. And remember too, these gas mileage figures are only for it's first 11,000 miles or so. At 33,000 miles I have average 16,500 miles a year. So there you have it. In the next 6-8 months I will be updating the numbers as I drive and calculate my gas mileage. I also will be tracking my gas mileage on a seperate chart for towing my Polaris Ranger around in it's 14x7 V-nose enclosed trailer
PRIOR to Bed Cover and Skid Plates
Cost /miles on truck / miles traveled / gallons / ave. mpg /
$3.30 / 1,938 / 225 / 17.89 / 12.58 LOW
$3.53 / 2,793 / 364 / 21.25 / 17.13 HIGH
5,370 / 350 / 15.34 average
AFTER Bed Cover and Skid Plates installed
$3.99 / 7,079 / 225 / 14.89 / 15.11 LOW
$3.96 / 6,855 / 536 / 27.80 / 19.28 HIGH
5,270 / 307.49 / 17.14 ave. (1.8 incr.)
These are the numbers from the EPA on my window sticker, then what my actual numbers are.
Miles per year / Comb. ave. mpg / cost per Gal. / ave. yearly cost
Stick. 15,000 / 13 / $3.00 / $3,462.00
Mine 16,500 / 16.3 / $3.73 / $3.755.77

So there you have it..........................

After I posted this and I looked at it, it bunched all the numbers togather, I had them spaced nicely Sorry.........

Cool

When I ordered it with the 6.2 it automatically came with the Max Tow package. I ordered mine with 3.73LS gears.

It saddens me that your highest mpg is better than mine.

Cool

Sorry about that Well, these numbers are from when the truck was still relatively new, and before I done most of the current mods. I actually am getting better mileage these days. When I did the comparing of my yearly fuel cost on my mileage (16,500) to the EPA's average of on 15,000 mles, I was using numbers from Jan. to about Aug. of 2011. So I am really anxious to do it with current numbers. Plus in the near future I'll be getting a tuner, probably the SCT Livewire TS-5015. Just been lazy about ordering it .

When I can get into another truck after mines put away in storage I'd look at 6.2. In a few years I'll probably look for a nice used one. It appears to be a great all around motor. Great numbers and writeup. I also beat the EPA ratings on my 04... mine pulls low 20s highway with my roush wheels. Although when I can add a blower I want care anymore

Btw its meticulous

Cool

That's cool. I think that over all the engines in these trucks do very well. Especially if you can boast these kind of numbers with a 4x4, with any type of extended cab and the gear ratios we run. I know that right now my mpg cruising at 55 is 22-23 mpg all day. once, I even hit over 24. Of course that's with a nice road, nice weather, etc.. As long as I keep my foot "mostly" out of it , and do more highway driving (which I usually do) I'm typically at 18+ at fill up time. I would like to here some more numbers from you guys.....

Just for kicks, I wanted to do a few more calculations. I was curious to see how many tank fulls of gas this translated into as compared to the EPA ratings. Then I calculated and compared my average gallons per week, and average weekly fuel costs as taken from the yearly averages. So..
TANK FULLS: (Gallons per Year divided by Tank Capacity, 36 for me)
Sticker: 1,154gal. dv. by 36 = 32.05 tanks
Mine: 1,012.27gal. dv by 36 = 28.12 tanks

GALLONS per WEEK: (Gallons per Year devided by 52 weeks)
Sticker: 1,154gal. dv by 52wks. = 22.19gal.
Mine: 1,012.27gal. dv by 52wks. = 19.47gal.

WEEKLY FUEL COST: (Gallons per week x price per gallon OR Average yearly cost dv by 52 weeks)
Sticker: 22.19gal. x $3.00 = $66.58
Mine: 19.47gal. x $3.73 = $72.62

Cool

Hey bud. How ya be? I lived down there for a long time when I was a bit younger ('86-'95). One of the best places to live. I envy you. First I lived in Pots Nets. Family had a trailer there since '68. Then moved to Clarksville. Then Ocean View. Then Fenwick Island. And a few others. My most favorite time of my life. Ever been to Punkin' Chunkin'? Been goin' there almost since it started. At first it was just a one day event held on sunday. Now it's friday-sunday. Too big for it's britches now if you ask me. Ever been to the Apple Scrapple festival? That's awesome too. SeaWitch festival at Halloween? Is the June Jam still goin' on? Maybe I will come down .

No, haven't been to any of those. Not quite here by choice, I'll put it that way I suppose. State is too friggin' flat, and I like hills. But sure, if ya wanna comeon' down and play, let me know.
