Future classics?

A thread in the 1997-2003 forum got me to thinking about our cars today and whether or not they will be classics in the future. I can't help but think that in the future, cars such as the current gen Mustang, with its heritage design and 5.0 hype, will be a collector's item in the future. But what about those equipped with options such as the SYNC touchscreen - what kind of shape will those screens be in 30 years down the road? And will there always be a way to update the maps or will they be rendered useless once they're completely outdated by new technology? Same question applies for current Camaros and Challengers as well. I see "classic" restoration becoming much more difficult and expensive in the future with all of the electronic components in today's vehicles.

I don't see it. More and more cars are being made, making them less valuable. I can see them still getting traded around and everything, but nothing that everyone is going to go nuts for. By then, we'll have twin-turbo I4s getting 500rwhp and 35mpg

I see computer stuff hard to work around, since many manufacturers just stop supporting stuff after 5-10 year range. No more module updates, or even software to communicate to them becomes obsolete when they buy new computers.

IMO, the only cars that will be 'collectible' in the future from the 1980's forward is going to be those that are factory OEM and have ultra low miles like "clean" has already eluded to..

Maybe the new GT 500's and some of the other 'retro' muscle cars they are making now will have some value in the future if they keep the miles down on them.. Will they bring in what a 1970 "any make/model" OEM Muscle Car brings now on Barrett Jackson?? Who knows, but if you had bought a brand new 1969 Boss 429 back in the day for around 6 grand and kept the miles down on it and didn't 'mod' it or crash it, it would be worth in the low to mid 6 figure range now..

Once gasoline starts to really dwindle in supply, I don't know what will happen, but I'm probably not going to be around by then, so who cares!

When I win the Lotto, I'll be getting my dream garage and all my dream cars/trucks...

Until then, I keep the ol' F150 running and just 'dream'...

Mitch

That's kinda what I'm thinking.

Yeah I think GT's may be collectible but only in low-mileage. A GT/CS will probably be worth a little more and the GT500s worth quite a bit in the future. Not sure where the Boss will fit in; I could quite possibly see it being worth more than the GT500 in the future if they only produce it for a few years.

thats not true. Back in the 60's mustangs were bulit in the hundreds of thousands. Now if they sell 50 thousand mustangs in a year thats considered an excellent year. I think the best year ever for mustang was around 250 thousand and there were 2 years like that 66 and 78 or 79.. the 66 model year is pretty collectable 78-79 not so much.

The funny thing about cars that are collectable now is there was a time no one wanted those collector car that are highly sought after now. in 79 I could buy 69 camaros all day long for 1200 bucks NICE ones. You could find them that needed fixed up for as little as 300 bucks. Same with Mustangs Chargers and all the other cars everyone wants now.

thats true tho, its a nostalgic thing, people want to restore what they remember seeing growing up/owning.

I bet any of the 99-04 Mustang will be sought after in 20 years. Think about how many people own/owned one, and in 20 years will want to relive those memories
