I would lay a very large amount of money on the fact that I have travelled far more widely in the States than you ever have.....met more people...and discussed things such as we are talking about now, in greater depth than you might imagine.

 

Or he would have just mixed together the same concoctions he had booby trapped his apartment with and watch the theater go boom.

 

I think saying “somebody should be watching folks like this” is the beginning of a very slippery slope here. Sure, this guy is pretty well proved he’s a nut, but who’s to determine who is nuts and who’s sane if we go down this path? Be very careful here.

 

Actually to answer the OP's original post, yes proper gun control would have helped immensely if someone had used one.

Proper grip
Proper stance
Controlled breathing
Proper sight alignment
Slow, steady, controlled press of the trigger

Repeat as often as necessary to eliminate the threat.

First, let's clear some things up. Body armor is not a magic wand, or pixie dust, or a force field from Star Trek. Unless you're wearing a tank, if i hit you with a round from a PB9511, you're going down, and it's going to hurt. You will not be "popping back up" any time soon, and you'll be lucky to hang on to anything, like your gun.
Second, CCW holders train. Personally, i train with hostage targets. very sobering at first, but i have gotten much better at it.
finally, bad guy is firing in the dark into a screaming mob. from somewhere in that mob, he's catching fire. he could stand there and try to figure out where from... if he assumes there is only one... etc., etc., etc.

the point is not to save everyone; the point is to make bad man stop spraying the crowd. that will save more than any other strategy, including running for gun control.
